The Ocean Dream (dt. Ocean Dream ) is a cruise ship , which is now for the Japanese Peace Boat organization in action. The ship became known as the first new construction project of the American shipping company Carnival Cruise Lines .

history

Construction and commissioning

The current Ocean Dream was commissioned in 1980 as Tropicale for the American shipping company Carnival Cruise Lines with hull number 234 from the Danish Aalborg Vaerft . The launch took place on October 31, 1981. The ship was delivered in December of the same year to the owner AVL Marine, a subsidiary of the shipyard based in Liberia . The technical design of the ship comes from the British company Technical Marine Planning, the interior was designed by the naval architect Joe Farcus . The typical chimney shape of the Carnival ships was first realized when the Tropicale was built.

commitment

After the commissioning, the owner company chartered the Tropicale to Carnival Cruise Lines for an initial 10 years until it passed into the hands of Carnival Corporation & plc in 1991 . The Tropicale initially ran from the base port of Miami for cruises to the Caribbean. The first operations on the American west coast followed in September 1982. After stationing in San Juan (around 1990) and New Orleans (around 1994), the Tropicale was the shipping company's first ship to be used for cruises to Alaska . At the end of the 1990s, the shipping company tried unsuccessfully to use the ship on the Asian market. Then the Tropicale was used again in the Caribbean .

On September 7th, Carnival announced that it would sell the ship to the Italian subsidiary Costa Crociere SpA . After her last cruise for Carnival Cruise Lines in February 2001, the Tropicale was transferred to Genoa , where she was converted and modernized for the European market at the T. Mariotti shipyard . The “Carnival” chimney was also replaced by a cylindrical variant typical of the Costa shipping company. The cost was given as 25 million euros. Costa Crociere SpA used the Costa Tropicale on routes in the Mediterranean and South America .

After the ship was modernized at the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo , it was sold to P&O Cruises Australia at the end of 2005 . There it was used until 2008 under the name Pacific Star from Brisbane in the Southeast Pacific.

In May 2008, the Spanish tour operator Pullmantur Cruises took over the ship and put it back into service under the name Ocean Dream after a modernization carried out in Singapore . Their area of operation was the Caribbean .

Since May 2012, the ship has been used by the Japanese Peace Boat Organization for global cruises.

Furnishing

The Ocean Dream has 12 suites and 478 cabins of various categories. With normal occupancy, the ship offers space for 1,022 passengers, the theoretical maximum occupancy is over 1,400 passengers. In addition to four restaurants and six bars, the ship also has a theater. The swimming pools are located at the rear of the promenade deck and on the Lido deck. In addition to two whirlpools on the promenade deck, there is another whirlpool on the sun deck.

Special occurrences

  • In February 1996, the ship ran aground near Tampa and had to be towed free.
  • In September 1999, after a fire in the engine room, the ship was incapable of maneuvering in the Gulf of Mexico for two days . After the machines could be put back into operation, the ship returned to Tampa.
  • In July 2007 and January 2008, heavy seas in the waters around New Zealand resulted in damage to windows and antenna systems as well as leaks in rusted areas of the outer skin.
  • In the " The A-Team " episode "A seafaring that's funny" Season 4, episodes 1 and 2 was shot on the Tropicale .
