history

Vicopisano originated at the confluence of the Serchio in the Arno (the Serchio, then still known as Auser or Auserculus (little Auser), was later diverted and since that time no longer led into the Arno, but directly into the Ligurian Sea at San Rossore ) . Due to the strategically favorable location and the proximity to Pisa, the place and its economy also developed. The place was first mentioned in writing in a document from the Bishop of Pisa , Zanobi, according to which the Church of Santa Maria e Giovanni is in sita loco et finibus Vicho . After the defeat of Pisas, who exerted a strong influence on Vicopisano since 1230, against Florence in 1406 the place came under the rule of Florence, where he with a few exceptions (1494-1498) and (1502-1503) and later in the Duchy of Tuscany up remained for the unification of Italy. In 1434 the Rocca di Vicopisano , also called Rocca del Brunelleschi or Rocca Nuova , was built by Filippo Brunelleschi .
