Dennis is a male given name that is also used as a family name.

Origin and meaning

Dennis is a common given name in Scotland and the USA , which is derived from Dionysus , the Greek god of wine, madness, ecstasy and joy. Saint Dionysius of Paris (French: St. Denis) contributed to the spread of the name. He came to Lutetia (later Paris) as a missionary in the 3rd century and is considered the city's first bishop. He is the patron saint of Paris and one of the fourteen emergency helpers .

The 1993 movie Dennis (Dennis the Menace) and the US sitcom of the same name (1959–1963), which go back to an American cartoon character , made the name popular in Germany.
