Edward Cooper (politician, 1873)

Edward Cooper (born February 26, 1873 in Treverton , Northumberland County , Pennsylvania , † March 1, 1928 in Bluefield , West Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1919 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Life

In 1875, Edward Cooper came to Fayette County , West Virginia, with his parents . There he attended both public and private schools. He then studied law, among other things, at Washington and Lee University in Lexington ( Virginia ) until 1894 . After he was admitted to the bar in 1894, Cooper began his new profession in Bramwell , Mercer County for three years. In this city he was also on the city council for eight years. After the death of his father, Cooper gave up his legal practice to continue the family-owned coal business.

Cooper was a member of the Republican Party . In 1912 he attended the Republican National Convention in Chicago as a delegate . In 1914 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fifth district of West Virginia , where he succeeded James A. Hughes on March 4, 1915 . After re-election in 1916, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1919 , which had been determined by the events of the First World War since 1917 . In the elections of 1918 he was no longer confirmed.

After his tenure in Congress was over, Cooper returned to his business in the coal industry. He became director of several companies that were active in this field. Edward Cooper died in Bluefield on March 1, 1928 and was buried in Richmond, Virginia.
