Edward Stettinius junior
Edward Reilly Stettinius, Jr. (born October 22, 1900 in Chicago , Illinois , † October 31, 1949 in Greenwich , Connecticut ) was an American diplomat and politician ( Democratic Party ). He served as the United States Secretary of State under Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman .
Stettinius first worked in the executive suite of General Motors , later at US Steel , until President Roosevelt brought him into politics. In 1943 he became Vice Secretary of State ( United States Under Secretary of State ) before he succeeded Cordell Hull, who was struggling with health problems, in the office of Secretary of State on December 1, 1944 . After President Roosevelt's death in April 1945, he was a member of the cabinet of his successor Truman for two and a half months before being replaced by James F. Byrnes .
Stettinius was instrumental in founding the United Nations and was also the first UN ambassador to the United States . After differences of opinion between him and President Truman, Stettinius resigned from his positions in 1946.
