Flawil ( pronounced in the local dialect Flòòwiil [ ˈflɔːʋiːl ] ) is a political municipality in the eastern Swiss canton of St. Gallen . Flawil had a population of 10,345 at the end of 2014.
The community is located in Untertoggenburg and belongs to the constituency of Wil .
geography
The municipality has an area of 11.51 km 2 . The lowest point is on the Glatt at 542 m above sea level. M. The highest is above Alterschwil at 814 m above sea level. M. The Flawil station is at 610.6 m above sea level. M. Flawil consists of the actual village and the hamlets of Oberglatt , Burgau , Egg, Alterschwil, Langenentschwil, Grobenentschwil and Raaschberg.
The neighboring communities of Flawils are Oberbüren , Gossau , Herisau , Degersheim and Oberuzwil .
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 819 as Flahinwilare. Around 850 it was divided into the villages of Flahinwilare and Uzzinwilare (today Uzwil ) by order of Count Gerold (IV.) .
After the aristocratic period of chivalry, the Giel ministerial family of St. Gallen acquired the area around Flawil.

Municipal council
The municipal council consists of seven people: 2 FDP, 2 CVP, 1 SP, 1 environmental liberal St.Gallen and 1 non-party.
There is no municipal parliament, but a citizens' assembly that meets twice a year.
National elections
In the Swiss parliamentary elections 2019, the share of the vote in Flawil was: SVP 26.2%, CVP 18.6, FDP 17.5%, SP 14.5%, Greens 11.5%, glp 6.7%, EPP 1.7 %, BDP 1.2%, EDU 0.8%.
coat of arms
Wilhelm Weiss, a master painter committed to local history and homeland security, presented a draft for a Flawil municipal coat of arms on September 7, 1915.
As a template, he used the Giel coat of arms, which showed a cross-sectioned shield, silver on top and red and silver on the bottom. Above it was a silver spade helmet crowned with a golden crown and on top of it a peacock neck. The meaning of the checkered field in the Giel coat of arms is unknown today.
On October 19, 1915, the coat of arms was officially awarded to Flawil by Duke Leopold of Austria. In the execution by the engraver Egger, on the advice of the historian Professor Max Gmür, the helmet as a symbol of the aristocracy should be omitted. The changed coat of arms, which then showed a wall crown, was available on September 19, 1916. It was finally approved by the municipal coat of arms commission of the canton of St. Gallen on December 6, 1938 without a helmet or wall crown.

43% of the population are Roman Catholic , 25% are Protestant and 33% are non-denominational or have another denomination (as of August 31, 2012).
Attractions
The most important monuments worth seeing include the old town hall, the Hirschen inn, the Protestant church (partly Art Nouveau) and the Catholic church of St. Laurentius. The Wissbachtobel near Egg is a popular destination.
Leisure, culture, sport
Numerous leisure, sports and cultural associations shape social life in Flawil.
The well-developed infrastructure includes a multi-purpose hall (Lindensaal), a library, a local museum, a toy library , soccer fields , gyms, tennis courts, a riding hall, a fencing hall, an outdoor pool and a Vitaparcours with a Finnish track .
Flawil knows the local recreation areas of Botsberger Riet, the area around Mattenhof / Gutsbetrieb and Girenmoos.
education
There are several kindergartens (Feld, Wiesental, Botsberg), primary schools (Feld, Grund Enzenbühl and Botsberg) and an upper school center (Feld) for compulsory schooling. Secondary schools are located in St. Gallen . The Flawil Special Education School offers classes from kindergarten to high school.
Courses for vocational training and further education are offered in the Mattenhof Education Center.

One of the three hospitals in the St. Gallen-Rorschach-Flawil hospital region is in Flawil.
regional customs
The Lägelis Night, which takes place every Tuesday evening after Otmar (November 16), is presumably based on the legend of Abbot Otmar of St. Gallen , who was transferred from the island of Werd to St. Gallen in 759 after his death . On this occasion, the children of Flawil drive a procession through the village with carts . The carriages are decorated with elaborately carved vine lights and pumpkins lit from the inside with candles .
At the beginning of the Carnival season on Dirty Thursday at "eleven from Siebni" (7:11 pm), the Flawil Fool's Council awards the Chratzbürste challenge prize to a citizen who attracted attention last year due to a funny or embarrassing incident. This is followed by the Beizenfasnacht, where Guggenmusiken parade through restaurants and encourage the population to celebrate.

Flawil has a station on the SBB -distance railway St. Gallen-Winterthur . There are three fast connections in both directions every hour.
Flawil is on Kantonsstrasse 8 ( main road 430) between Gossau and Wil . The cantonal road no. 54, which leads to Niederuzwil, begins on cantonal road no. 8 at the Maestrani roundabout in the west of Flawil. Connections to the A1 are guaranteed in both Gossau and Niederuzwil ( Oberbüren-Uzwil exit ) . The connection to Hauptstrasse 16 to Obertoggenburg is guaranteed by canton road no. 10 (Hauptstrasse 431), which also begins at the Maestrani roundabout and leads to Lütisburg.
Industry
The Maestrani, Munz and Minor brands of chocolates from maestrani Schweizer Schokoladen AG are produced and sold here. Other companies based in Flawil include FLAWA AG (now part of US Cotton), which manufactures dressing materials and cotton wool products, SFS intec AG, which specializes in deep-drawing and extrusion technology, and BUCHI Laboratory Equipment, which manufactures devices for laboratory technology , and LÜDI SWISS AG, which produces consumables in the analysis area.

In Flawil, the Flawil printing company published the Volksfreund (1878–1997), the Wiler Zeitung - Der Volksfreund (1998–2001) and the Wiler Zeitung (1962–1997, 2002–2013).
Agriculture
The St. Gallen seed cultivation is active in Flawil. It produces Pro Specie Rara potatoes, blue-meat potatoes (Blauer St. Gallen ) and local cold-pressed oils.
music
The St. Gallen dialect band Piggnigg , the music cabaret "er und i" and the Flawil post-grunge / metal band Strugglers are based in Flawil. Not to be forgotten is the Flawil harmony music, which has shaped the Flawil music scene for almost 150 years. The association "Musicalfieber Flawil" managed to gain national fame with its professional productions of Broadway musicals such as "The Addams Family" or "9 to 5".
