Egon Straszer
Egon Straszer (* 1966 in Malta , Carinthia) is an Austrian sculptor and painter .
Live and act
Egon Straszer in 1966 in Malta (district Spittal , Carinthia born) and completed 1981-1990 training to the Austrian apprenticeships blacksmith and wood and stone sculptor .
Since 1989 he turned to artistic activities and began to work as a freelance artist in the stone quarries of Adnet near Hallein and by participating in the stone carving symposia there (from 1991). At the same time he began to deal with bronze casting . In 1992 he founded the artist and bronze casting group “ARGE EUG” in Salzburg with Peter Wiener and other colleagues. This group built a melting furnace for the lost wax process and a test workshop for bronze casting in cooperation with the then Oberascher bell foundry . At the same time, Egon Straszer worked for Josef Zenzmaier from 1993–1995 as an assistant at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg (bronze casting and sculpture class).
From the mid-1990s onwards, however, he focused primarily on stone carving and began to explore the possibilities of stone carving in the present through experimental discussions. a. since the beginning of the 2000s through the development of new variants of the artistic stone carving in tight parallel cuts, which reveal sculptural forms through computer-controlled diamond cutting inside square stone blocks (see below).
2006 Egon Straszer received the promotional award for visual arts of the province of Carinthia .
In 2007 he moved from his previous place of residence and work in Carinthia (first Bad Kleinkirchheim , then Seeboden am Millstätter See ) to Großrust near St. Pölten in Lower Austria , where he has lived and his workshop ever since.
Works by Egon Straszer can be found in public and private art collections in Austria and Germany, such as the art collection of the State of Lower Austria , the Kunstforum Strabag or the Infineon collection . His works are also displayed in a number of places as art in public spaces , e.g. B. in Bad Kleinkirchheim (fountain in the spa park and in the St. Kathrein thermal baths), in Obritzberg-Rust , at the Hochleithen rest station on the Austrian north motorway A5, in the state clinic Neunkirchen , in Weinburg an der Pielach, in the sculpture park Thumersbach or in the sculpture line “ Stones without borders ” from Berlin-Buch via Hobrechtswald to Barnim .
Egon Straszer is a member of the Carinthian Art Association and the Krastal Artwork Association , where he was also a member of the board from 2009–2015, and of the Künstlerhaus Wien , where he is also the Sculpture Coordinator as of 2018.
Works and forms
Development of the design language
At the beginning of his work, Egon Straszer also experimented with cast bronze or wood, but soon limited himself to stone. His works have so far explored many possibilities in the design of stones, such as hollowing the stone, breaking through and perforating limiting stone walls, or exposing and shaping a core.
New forms through new technology: sculptures in perspective
In his more recent works, Egon Straszer leaves old traditions of sculpture (actually only forming the surface) behind and tries to find new forms of expression through new technical possibilities. According to his designs, these shapes are created using computer-controlled diamond milling machines only inside stone blocks. This particular technique of stone carving can be described as follows:
- In a stone block, computer-controlled cuts are milled in tight layers, which leave shapes inside the block.
- The visible surface is then initially square, is polished smooth and reflects. However, due to the narrow spacing between the spaces, gestalt laws of perception apply. The stone surface closes like a curtain and initially simply shows its stone grain (mostly East Tyrolean serpentinite ).
- The sculptures are not only defined in this external view, but only in looking through, in perceiving the core, in the light reflections on the upper and lower surfaces of the cut panels and the translucence of the form. It's about the optimal angle to catch the silhouette of the figure. They are “sculptures in perspective”.
- Perception is actually in the eye of the beholder - a blind opens, a blind closes (depending on the perspective), and this changes the perception.
stone_clearing
In this experimental process, an extensive series of works has emerged over the past few years and to this day, which Egon Straszer himself calls "stone_clearing". The serpentinite and granite used for this function both as a technical and an aesthetic material: “ This involves both the question of new possibilities for figurative design and also with regard to material immanence, that is, the ability to design in the material itself. A decisive new thing is taking place here Moment of his artistic self-image. Using meticulous, computer-controlled cross-sections of the stone with diamond saws, he succeeds in "shaping" human figures in the stone itself. Depending on the viewing angle of the geometrically cut stone, a human body becomes visible in three dimensions. The artist creates a new transparency of the hard stone material, inside and outside are permanently reversed: the personages carved out in the stone blocks appear and disappear depending on the perspective. "
Egon Straszer as a painter
More recently Egon Straszer has also been experimenting as a painter with the means of expression of drawing and lithography .
