A very hot number

A very hot number 2.0 is a German comedy film by Rainer Kaufmann from 2019 . It is the sequel to A very hot number (2011). The script by Kathrin Richter and Jürgen Schlagenhof is based on characters created by Andrea Sixt . Gisela Schneeberger , Rosalie Thomass and Bettina Mittendorfer once again slipped into their roles Waltraud, Lena and Maria, who in A Very Hot Number 2.0 try to help their community suffering from rural exodus to broadband internet access by participating in a dance competition .

The sequel was made by Rat Pack Filmproduktion in coproduction with ATrack Film, Constantin Film , Martin Richter Filmproduktion, Mythos Film, tnf telenormfilm and ZDF . The shooting again took place from April to June 2018 mainly in the Lower Bavarian community of Gotteszell . The theatrical release was in Germany on October 3, 2019 and in Austria the following day. Critics unanimously praised the acting performance in the film, but rated it mostly negative compared to its predecessor due to its script.

action

Marienzell, a community in Lower Bavaria , is suffering from the rural exodus - people are moving away, tourists are staying away, there is no work and no young people. Above all, there is no broadband internet connection . A fast line is nowhere in sight. For the communications company operating in the region, an investment is not worthwhile due to the low population and high costs. While the men in the village are trying to lay a fiber optic cable in the village on their own , farmer Lena sees an opportunity to raise the necessary funds elsewhere: She wants to take part in a dance competition in neighboring Josefkirchen in order to finance the to advance the necessary infrastructure. Once again ridiculed by the residents of the conservative town, she can at least persuade Maria and the hesitant Waltraud to participate. Only when the trio accidentally receives support from Jorge González do the preparations for the competition take off.

But also in private life, each of the three women has to struggle with their own worries and needs: Maria, who works in a spa after giving up her corner shop , is confronted with her ex-husband Manni's new marriage. Blinded by her friendly relationship with him, she still hopes for a new start with him. When Manni reveals to her that he is planning to sell the home that Maria still lives in, the situation between the two of them escalates and Maria throws him out. She finds support in her friend, the local bus driver Loisi, who also turns out to be a talented hobby dancer and supports the women in their project.

Lena finally wants a baby from her partner Willi, but in view of the poor financial situation of the couple, he sees no basis for a family. When she finds out that he prefers to consume porn instead of sleeping with her, she pulls the plug and unceremoniously moves in with Maria with her domestic pig Pauli. Waltraud, who in the meantime makes her way as a cashier in a supermarket and also earns pocket money as a casual hairdresser and nursing care, sees herself increasingly trapped in her uninspired marriage with husband Heinz. It was not until the death of Dr. Huber can open his eyes to Waltraud, who then also packs the suitcase and moves to Maria to work on her performance with her and Lena.

Shortly before their appearance, Moni, the mayor's wife, thwarted the trio's plans: Together with two friends, she also rehearsed a revealing performance of the song “ Lady Marmalade ”. Lena then decides to compete alone and asks Willi, who is also present, to perform a tango on stage. The couple is frenetically celebrated by the audience for their improvised performance, but in the end they cannot prevail against the competition. Ms. Jörgensen, the head of the regional communications company, whom Waltraud had previously invited to the event, recognizes the great need of the community in the commitment of the three women and then approves the laying of fiber optics in Marienzell by her company.

production

background

The film adaptation of author Andrea Sixt's novel A Very Hot Number advanced to become the second most successful German arthouse production of 2011 with more than 1.3 million visitors . The adaptation also received mainly positive reviews from critics. Thus, an entire hot number among other things in the film category for the National Bambi 2012 nominated. In May 2013 it was announced that Sixt was working on a sequel entitled A very hot number - Alle nackert . The film adaptation of the novel and the script was to be made again from August of that year under the direction of Markus Goller and camera by Ueli Steiger in Gotteszell and the surrounding area. In addition to Gisela Schneeberger , Bettina Mittendorfer and Rosalie Thomass , Monika Gruber and Sigi Zimmigart were also asked again.

In contrast to A Very Hot Number , Sixt promised a broader thematic approach, which allowed for an equally “broader, nationwide cinema release” to be considered. The story should be about using half a year after the events of the original and tell of an uninvited motorcycle gang that the figure Maria after returning from their trip to South America with the help of her friends and a learned during a shaman impotence remedy believes to flight. However, both the announced publication of the novel by Blanvalet Verlag and the start of filming had to be discarded several times after scheduling problems with the original cast prevented further planning into 2014. After Goller left the project, director Rainer Kaufmann was offered to direct the sequel, which he ultimately declined. Sixt's script was then discarded.

Filming

Once again, the community of Gotteszell in the Bavarian Forest acted as the main location.

The authors Kathrin Richter and Jürgen Schlagenhof were finally commissioned to write a new story. Martin Richter , producer of the original and responsible for further development at Rat Pack Filmproduktion , brought Kaufmann, who had already worked with Richter several times, back into play. This finally agreed. A very hot number 2.0 was realized in the lead by Rat Pack Filmproduktion under the direction of Richter and his colleague Christian Becker , in coproduction with ATrack Film, Constantin Film , Martin Richter Filmproduktion, Mythos Film, and tnf telenormfilm. In addition to Sixt, Florian Deyle and Philip Schulz-Deyle once again appeared as co-producers, as did Cord Troebst and Martin Moszkowicz for the first time . It was involved, the ZDF , edited by Caroline of sending and Esther Hechenberger.

The production was financially supported by the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF Bayern) and the German Film Funding Fund (DFFF). The shooting took place from April 24th to June 13th, 2018. It was filmed again in the Lower Bavarian community of Gotteszell and the surrounding area as well as in Munich . Gunnar Voigt was responsible for the sound, Petra Heim for the production design, Lucie Bates for the costumes and Nadine Scherer and Barbara Spenner for the masks. While Schneeberger, Mittendorfer, Thomass and the majority of the original cast stepped in front of the camera again, Gruber and Zimmigart did not return to the film set for the sequel - unlike for a very hot number - all nacked planned. Gruber's character, the mayor's wife Gerti Oberbauer, was then replaced by the role of Moni, whose play Franziska Schlattner took over. Ferry Öllinger's role of Heinz Wackernagel was again filled with Felix von Manteuffel for scheduling reasons .

Reviews

Oliver Kube found on filmstarts.de that the sequel absolutely needed a better script. So only individual scenes are quite amusing, but as a whole the film simply cannot hold a candle to its successful predecessor. The most beautiful are the moments when the lead actresses, who are otherwise too often spatially separated, act together on the screen. In addition, the dance interludes or the attempts to get them going in the first place are entertaining. The not so secret star of the film is Paul, Lena's cute piglet.

The cast around Gisela Schneeberger received positive reviews for their game.

Manfred Riepe from epd Film found that the film presented itself as a “modern Heimatfilm”, settled in the trend of other dialect thrillers such as the Eberhofer crime thrillers or Sau number four (2010), which also use the relevant clichés of Heimatfilm and at the same time go against the grain tried brushing. As a continuation, however, A very hot number 2.0 is "rather dispensable". Although the film has “definitely its moments”, the bottom line is that “thigh-thumping humor dominates. The film, noisy and not really subtle, is reminiscent of going through a fair ”.

Julian Weinberger wrote in the Weser Kurier that the film with the rural exodus and the lack of broadband coverage dealt with topics that couldn't be more topical in the Bavarian province. The actual story is increasingly out of focus because of the countless sidelights. Director Rainer Kaufmann tries to compensate for the lack of originality with scenes that are sometimes to the shame of others . The film Gisela Schneeberger would save from a total system failure, she shows a remarkable performance. The awkward attempts by Waltraud and her friends to cut a good figure in dance training with Jorge González would make up for the poor script. All in all, you would "but not get rid of the feeling that a TV movie would easily have done it".

Nürnberger Nachrichten editor Stefan Gnad called Eine sehr hot Number 2.0 a “lukewarm infusion” and criticized that the film lacks a proper script, in that the “flatness of the story” only underlines that “nobody dares to do anything in this sequel” have. The result was a hard-working set of clothes that relied on "pale sex jokes, cute piglets" and a cameo by Jorge González . Only the acting ensemble countered the "cramped, constructed and completely irony-free script [...] You can save yourself this cinema ticket".

Similarly, the film magazine Cinema also declared the comedy in its review as a “lukewarm remake of a well-known story”. Unfortunately, the fate of the fictional location in the film would be just as bad as the film as a whole: “If the original had a certain charm, the sequel looks old-fashioned and silly. If the film has to rely on a cute piglet and Let's Dance judge Jorge González for humor and the serious moments are the best, that doesn't exactly speak for a comedy ”.

publication

The premiere was on September 30, 2019 in the Mathäser-Filmpalast in Munich . The theatrical release was in Germany on October 3, 2019 and in Austria the following day. In Germany, A very hot number 2.0 was able to place itself in seventh place in the German cinema charts with around 85,000 visitors after the end of the first screening weekend. The gross profit was 715,000 euros. In Austria, the comedy rose again behind Gemini Man , Angry Birds 2 and Everest - A Yeti wants to reach number four in the cinema charts. The grossing result was 110,000 euros including previews.
