European Cup Winners' Cup (handball) 1979/80

The 1979/80 European Cup Winners' Cup was the fifth edition of the competition for European handball cup winners . The 21 participating teams qualified in their home countries through the national cup competition for the European Cup organized by the International Handball Federation (IHF) . In the final, the Spanish representative CB Calpisa Alicante prevailed against the automatically qualified defending champion VfL Gummersbach (20:15, 16:18). Teams from Poland , Romania , the Soviet Union and the GDR did not take part in the competition due to the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow .

The other clubs ( RK Borac Banja Luka , CSL Dijon , Debreceni Dózsa , Gladsaxe HG , TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen , IK Heim , Víkingur Reykjavík , UHK Krems , CB Calpisa Alicante , Slavia Prague and defending champion VfL Gummersbach ) automatically entered the tournament with a bye Round of 16 a.
