The Portuguese team before the game against New Zealand

In Group A, Portugal met host Russia, the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup winner Mexico and Oceania champions New Zealand. Against Russia there were three wins, one draw and two defeats in six games. There were previously two wins and one draw in three games against Mexico. The Portuguese had never played against the New Zealanders.

After a draw against Mexico and victories against Russia and New Zealand, the Portuguese became group winners due to the better goal difference and met South American champions Chile in the semifinals. Both have met three times so far, of which the Portuguese won the first two in 1928 and 1972 and the last ended in a draw in March 2011.
