Games Workshop is a British game manufacturer .
The company was founded in 1975 by Ian Livingstone , Steve Jackson and John Peake in a small apartment in London. Games Workshop originally imported board and role-playing games from the USA . The company was the first European provider of the first pen and paper role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons . The first store branch was opened in 1978. The business idea was not just to run another ordinary game shop, but to create a place where players can meet and exchange ideas. Game experts as sellers should also ensure the right hobby atmosphere.
After a short time, fantasy friends were traveling not only from Great Britain , but from all over Europe . Therefore, Games Workshop opened further branches first in Manchester , then Birmingham , Nottingham and Sheffield (now in every major city in Europe). The Games Workshop ensured a further increase in the popularity of fantasy games with the organization of Games Day , which was attended by 5000 people. The increasing popularity of the use of miniatures for role-playing games resulted in the Games Workshop specializing in such figures.
The company is currently based in Nottingham. Games Workshop is on the London Stock Exchange listed, and in 2005 an operating profit of 13.9 million pounds sterling ( £ ) (about 20.2 million € ) on a turnover of £ 136.6 million (about € 198.4 million). In 2007 Games Workshop's products were sold in over 320 own stores and 4,000 independent dealers. A total of 3,200 people work for Games Workshop.
Offshoots / subsidiaries and special departments
Associated with the Games Workshop Group, there are also offshoots / subsidiaries or special departments at Games Workshop that take care of special facets of the Games Workshop product range.
Fanatic Games
Games Workshop's specialist games department designs and develops special systems such as Inquisitor, Battlefleet Gothic, Epic, Necromunda, Mortheim, The Battle Of The Five Armies, Warmaster and Blood Bowl , which are usually not as common as the main systems.
Citadel Miniatures
According to a popular legend, Citadel was originally a stand-alone company that was later bought by Games Workshop. In fact, it was founded by Games Workshop together with Bryan Ansell, as can be read in the News in issue 11 of the English White Dwarf from 1979. Today she produces the essential parts of the tabletop hobby - the figures and models, as well as various other materials, for example modeling clay, tools or pieces of terrain / litter. Rules appear for almost every Citadel Miniatures miniature and vice versa.
Forge World
Unlike Citadel Miniatures, this label, also a subsidiary of Games Workshop, produces additional material for the models of the existing systems as well as detailed miniatures and large models made of resin .
Black Library
There is also various material in book form. Black Library is a subsidiary of the British company BL Publishing . She produces all novels, art books, background books and much more, around and in the dark universe of Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 . BL Publishing is a subsidiary of Games Workshop.
Black Industries
As a subsidiary of GW, Black Industries was responsible for the production and development of the Warhammer fantasy role-playing game and the Warhammer 40,000 role-playing game Dark Heresy. Both games are published in German translation by Feder & Schwert . Black Industries ceased operations at the end of 2008.
Games Workshop product range
Games Workshop no longer mainly sells role-playing games (only the in-house “Warhammer RPG” is still sold), but rather tabletop games and the necessary accessories. Games Workshop sells the game systems Warhammer Fantasy , Warhammer Age of Sigmar , Warhammer 40,000 , The Lord of the Rings , The War of the Ring, as well as smaller systems and all the necessary pewter, resin and plastic figures. Terrain parts, paints, brushes , glue, modeling clay (“Green Stuff”) and everything else related to the hobby tabletop are also available from Games Workshop.
Main game systems
The tabletop game Warhammer Fantasy Battles (now officially known as Warhammer or, to differentiate, Warhammer Fantasy ), invented in 1979 by the then still small game company Games Workshop, is the cornerstone of Games Workshop's success. In 1987 the tabletop game “Rogue Trader” appeared, this time in a futuristic world, which in later editions was only known as Warhammer 40,000 (because it is set in the 41st millennium). Both games were (and still are) continuously developed and the changes published either through the company's own hobby magazine White Dwarf , through so-called army books (Warhammer Fantasy Battles), through codices (Warhammer 40,000) or through completely newly published editions of the two games.

Others
Many of the smaller side games never reached the German market and are otherwise very difficult to come by. In the field of video games in particular, it has happened several times that a game was announced but never published ( vaporware ). This concerns for example:
- Agents of Death
- Hive Fleet
- Aspect Warriors
Games Workshop also contributed characters and ideas for the following games:
- HeroQuest , published by MB Spiele
- StarQuest , published by MB Spiele
- The Claymore saga , (Original Battle Masters ), published by MB Spiele
In addition to games, books and hobby products, Games Workshop also produces a wide variety of fan articles (posters, busts, pins ...), the value of which is increased in part by limitation.

Due to changes in company policy, the "Drakenburg" was given up. z. At present it is being tested in the USA whether there should be bigger hobby shops again.
