The 2008/09 season was the 70th edition of the Norwegian ice hockey league and the third under the name GET-ligaen . The defending champions were the Storhamar Dragons , but they were eliminated in the semifinals. The new champion was Vålerenga Ishockey with a final victory over the Sparta Warriors .

Participant field and mode

The total number of participants remained unchanged at ten compared to the previous season, but there was a change in the composition. After a miserable preseason, the Trondheim Black Panthers were disbanded. In the playdowns, Stjernen had secured relegation. With Lørenskog IK a team rose from the 1st divisjon , which eventually took over the vacated place of the Panthers.

In the regular season, a two-and-a-half round back and forth was played, which resulted in a total of forty-five games for each team. This was followed by playoffs consisting of quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals, each of which was played in best-of-seven mode.

Basic round

Table after the basic round

The table doesn't quite reflect the sporting circumstances as there have been some criminal verifications. Vålerenga Ishockey were deducted three points from their game against the Sparta Warriors on October 5, 2008 for unsportsmanlike conduct . During the game a total of 103 penalty minutes (including several match penalties) were pronounced against the club from Oslo. Stjernen and IK Comet each had to accept point deductions of 15 and 10 points respectively due to their desperate economic defeat.

    Playoffs

After the Storhamar Dragons , the defending champions were eliminated already in the semifinals, met in the final of the Sparta Warriors on Vålerenga Ishockey . The latter had celebrated their last three titles in the years 2005 to 2007, while the Warriors had last been champions in 1989. Although Sparta had competed more confidently in their semi-final series, they quickly fell behind with 0: 3 wins in the final. With two overtime victories, they were able to delay the defeat, but finally lost in the sixth game with 0: 1. Kenneth Larsen scored the all-important goal in the second period; Patrick DesRochers earned the second shutout of the season playoffs.
