The 1979 Girabola was the first season of the Girabola , the top national division of football in Angola after the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975.

prehistory

In the last championship in Angola under Portuguese colonial administration in 1975, the CR Caála from Nova Lisboa (today Huambo ) was the front runner when the game had to be canceled after 12 match days. The reason was the outbreak of civil war in Angola (1975–2002). That left Ferrovia Sport Clube de Nova Lisboa , also from Nova Lisboa, the last Angolan champions until independence end 1975th

In 1979 the young country's football association, the Federação Angolana de Futebol (FAF), was founded. She now organized the new Angolan national championship. In order to begin regular league operations, the FAF first held a preliminary round tournament. It selected 24 clubs from all of the then 16 Angolan provinces . On the one hand, the first master of independent Angola was played out. On the other hand, in the end the 14 best clubs qualified for the following Girabola in 1980 , which became the first season in the henceforth regular league operations.

Minguito, striker of Vitória Atlético do Bié, scored on December 8, 1979 in the 11th minute in the game against Académica do Lobito, the first goal of the new Girabola. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Some clubs had to change their names in the course of the anti-colonial mood in the country, as they reminded too much of their Portuguese past, especially branches of the clubs Sporting Lisbon ( Portuguese : Sporting Clube de Portugal ) and Benfica Lisbon ( Portuguese : Sport Lisboa e Benfica ).

mode

In the preliminary round for Girabola 1979, 24 teams took part, selected by the FAF from all parts of the country.

They competed against each other in four groups, each of which played out a group winner. Then the four winners played against each other in a drawn semi-final in the actual Girabola. The two winners then played out the champions in a final. The 14 best teams also qualified for the following season, the Girabola 1980.
