Grand Prix of Long Beach (Sports Car Racing)
As part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach , a sports car race will take place at the Long Beach Grand Prix Circuit in Long Beach , California , United States , which is currently (2013) under the name Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach .
history
In 1990 there was a sports car race for the first time as part of the Grand Prix weekend's supporting program. The IMSA GT Championship drove in its two smallest classes, the GTO ( GT O ver 2.5L) and the GTU ( GT U nder 2.5L) class, a 1-hour race on the Saturday before the Grand Prix. The race was repeated the following year, after which the sports cars said goodbye to the Grand Prix. It was not until 2006 that a sports car race was held again as part of the Grand-Am Sports Car Series . It was only the top class with the Daytona prototypes at the start, Scott Pruett and Luiz Díaz won the race, which was held only once.
In 2007 the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) took over the Grand-Am. Since then, the race has been held as a 100-minute race, making it the shortest of any ALMS season. At every appearance so far, all four or five classes of the series were at the start, the highest number of starters was achieved in 2010 with 35 vehicles.
In 2014 , the sports car race will be held as part of the United SportsCar Championship , the association of ALMS and Grand-Am. Due to the high number of starters in the new series, only the classes for prototypes (P) and Le Mans GT vehicles (GTLM) will be at the start. The race length will continue to be 100 minutes.
