Johannes Grenzfurthner (born June 13, 1975 in Vienna ) is an Austrian artist , filmmaker , author , curator , performer, actor and lecturer. Grenzfurthner is the founder and artistic director of monochrom , an international art and theory group based in Q21 in Vienna's Museumsquartier . Many of his artistic works are labeled as monochrome .

He deals with topics such as art, actionism , artistic performance , urban hacking , humor , postmodernism , media theory , cultural studies , the debate on copyright and intellectual property , science fiction and blogs .

Grenzfurthner conducts research in the field of subversive underground cultures and is an expert in the interplay of sexuality and technology. In this context, he is one of the founders of the technohedonist movement .

The Boing Boing magazine describes Grenzfurthner as Leitnerd , a combination of the German word Leitkultur and the English word Nerd to characterize his position in the nerd / hacker / art scene.

Act

In the early 1990s Grenzfurthner was a member of various discussion forums. Grenzfurthner used his online contacts to bring monochrom to life, initially primarily as a zine (i.e. an alternative magazine) that dealt with the topics of art, technology and counterculture . His motivation was on the one hand to prevent the spread of conservative forces (see: Californian Ideology ) in cyber culture , on the other hand he wanted to combine his political activities in the Austrian punk and anti- fascist movement with the discourse on new technologies and cultural technologies. The monochrome publications contained interviews with and contributions from well-known personalities, u. a. Bruce Sterling , HR Giger , Eric Drexler , Terry Pratchett , Kathy Acker , Blixa Bargeld and Bob Black in an experimental layout style.

In 1995 Grenzfurthner decided to open up new artistic fields with monochrom and began to experiment with different media and forms of expression, e.g. B. computer games, puppet theater, films, artistic interventions, conferences, but also activism. Grenzfurthner calls this activist practice Urban Hacking or Context Hacking , a term that he himself coined.

Context hacking transfers the demands and approaches of the hackers to those social and societal conditions in which artistic production takes place and on which it is in turn dependent. In a metaphorical sense, these too have a source code. Programs run in them that we face on a user interface. Where we know how and through what a space, a niche, a scene, a subculture, a media or political practice functions, we can change and "recode" them, deconstruct their power relations and emancipate ourselves from their constraints and methods of preparation.

The collective is known for working in a variety of media, art and entertainment formats. Grenzfurthner describes the practice as follows: "[We] are looking for the weapon for the best possible dissemination of an idea, a so-called mass proliferation weapon."

Conferences and festivals

Grenzfurthner is director and curator of the Arse Elektronika festival in San Francisco , an annual academic and artistic conference series that deals with sexuality and technology. The first Arse Elektronika was conceived by Johannes Grenzfurthner in 2007 and was devoted to the question of the effects of sexuality on technological innovation and its adaptation.

Grenzfurthner also organizes Roboexotica , an international festival for cocktail robotics, which first took place in 1999 in Vienna. The festival invites researchers, artists and hobbyists to build machines that are able to mix or serve cocktails. V. Vale says of Roboexotica that it is "an ironic attempt to criticize techno-triumphalism and dissect technological hypes."

Grenzfurthner is director of Hedonistika , a festival for artistic food technologies, which was first held in Montreal in 2014 as part of the Biennale internationale d'art numèrique . The following festival took place in Holon (near Tel Aviv ) as part of the "Print Screen" festival.

Movie

Grenzfurthner is a screenwriter, director and managing director of the film production company monochrom Propulsion Systems . He is a member of the Austrian Directing Association, the Association of Austrian Documentary Filmmakers and a full member of the Academy of Austrian Films .

His feature film directorial debut was the post-apocalyptic science fiction comedy Die Gstettensaga: The Rise of Echsenfriedl , which was produced for ORF III in 2014 , but was also released in cinemas and online. This was followed by Traceroute , Grenzfurthner's first feature-length documentary, in 2016, followed by the essayistic political documentary Glossary of Broken Dreams (2018). Grenzfurthner is currently working on several feature film projects, such as Sierra Zulu and Tycho , a film musical about life and the eccentric astronomer Tycho Brahe . Grenzfurthner's second feature film Je suis Auto (with Chase Masterson ) is being co-directed by Juliana Neuhuber and will be released in April 2019.

In addition, Grenzfurthner published the much discussed pamphlet Hacking the Spaces in 2009 , which dealt with the exclusionist tendencies in the Hackerspace movement. Grenzfurthner expanded his criticism by giving lectures at the Hackers on Planet Earth conference in New York City in 2012 and 2014.

Grenzfurthner works as an entertainer and comedian and has appeared on various stages, e.g. B. in the Vienna Rabenhof Theater . Parts of his comedy program Fateful Years of a Nerd formed the basis for his first documentary Traceroute (2016).

Grenzfurthner also works as a presenter and moderator at various events, including critical events such as the Golden Board in front of the head .

Grenzfurthner played leading and supporting roles in several plays. Grenzfurthner can also be seen in the films Zero Crash by Andi Haller and Clickbait by Michael J. Epstein and Sophia Cacciola. In his 2020 film Je Suis Auto , he plays one of the two main roles.

Grenzfurthner started the Hackbus Community .

Together with Florian Hufsky , Leo Findeisen and Juxi Leitner, Grenzfurthner organized the first international conference of the Pirate Party .

Commercial work

Grenzfurthner designed a robot installation for the sex toy company Bad Dragon . He also created an artistic online advertising campaign for Frito-Lay's US brand Cheetos .

Private life

Grenzfurthner lives and works in Vienna . He grew up in Stockerau , Lower Austria , which he also addresses in his comedy program Fateful Years of a Nerd and in his semi-autobiographical documentary film Traceroute .

If I hadn't grown up in Stockerau in the Lower Austrian pampas , then I wouldn't be what I am now. The nucleus of nerdism is difference. The desire for understanding, for the opportunity to share experiences, not to be left alone with bizarre interests, but at the same time an almost perverse joy to wallow in this deficit. Nerds love the lack: that of others, but also their own. Nerds are eager researchers who like to measure themselves against each other and then also aggressively compete, but being nerd also has something occult and secret about it. How that power is then expressed or focused is very important.

Grenzfurthner often deals with personal impressions and experiences in his art. In a conversation with Zebrabutter magazine , for example, he describes the desire to work on his claustrophobia by starting a performance series in which volunteers can be buried alive .

As a child, Grenzfurthner spent a lot of time in Unterzögersdorf, a cadastral community of Stockerau, on his grandparents' farm. The stories of his grandparents about the time of National Socialism , the resulting Second World War and the subsequent Soviet occupation initiated monochroms long-term project Soviet-Unterzögersdorf , a fictional Soviet enclave in the Weinviertel .

controversy

Grenzfurthner was one of 200 activists, politicians and artists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (one of only ten Austrians) whose names and addresses were published on an ultra-right doxing list on several online platforms in December 2018 and January 2019 . The list was distributed with the hashtag # Wirkriegeneuchallee (sic!). Grenzfurthner spoke openly about this fact in lectures and on social media.
