Hancock is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 2394 inhabitants in 1437 households on an area of 100.1 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Hancock has a total area of 100.1 km², of which 77.2 km² is land and 22.9 km² consists of water .

Hancock is located in the south of Hancock County on Frenchman Bay on the Atlantic Ocean . Several smaller lakes are scattered over the area of the town. The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
The settlement of the Hancock area started in 1764. The first settlers were Oliver Wooster, Agreen Crabtree, Thomas McFarland, Thomas Roger and Joseph Googins. Hancock was organized as a town on February 21, 1828. Hancock was formed from lands that previously belonged to Sullivan, Trenton and Plantation Number 8. The town was named after John Hancock , the third president of the Continental Congress and co-signer of the Declaration of Independence .

- Nazi Spy Landing Site , recorded in 2003, register no. 03000015 . Two German spies went ashore here during the Second World War as part of the Elsters company .

The US Highway 1 leads from west to east by Hancock. The Maine State Route 182 branches off from it in a northerly direction .
Public facilities
There are no medical facilities or hospitals in Hancock. The closest are in Ellsworth and Bar Harbor.
The Hancock Point Library is located in a building constructed in 1887, which was donated to the town in 1914 as a library building.
education
In Hancock, the Hancock School Department is responsible for school education.
- The Hancock Grammar School is located in Hancock. It offers school classes from kindergarten through 8th grade.
- The private Pierre Monteux School is a school for conductors and orchestral musicians. It was founded by the conductor Pierre Monteux and offers a 6-week summer orchestra program.
