Harry Lewis Babcock (born August 12, 1930 in West Nyack , New York , † December 6, 1996 in Ocala , Florida ) was an American American football player. The in NFL Draft 1953 as a whole first selected End played three seasons for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL).
Career
Babcock played college football at the University of Georgia from the Southeastern Conference (SEC). As a junior, he led the SEC with 41 passports captured for 666 yards and a school record in the process. Before the start of his senior season, Babcock had a car accident that slowed his performance. Still, he could be the SEC's second best receiver.
Babcock was selected first overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1953 NFL Draft . He played three seasons, catching only 16 passes for 181 yards and no touchdown . Due to injury, however, he also missed many games and only took part in 30 games in total. Babcock is generally seen as a flop, like many of the first-round picks in his draft year. Seven of the thirteen selected players were already out of the league before 1957, and two more did not even play in the NFL.
