Neuenkirch is a municipality in the Sursee constituency in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland .

geography

Neuenkirch is located south of Lake Sempach and consists of the districts Neuenkirch , Sempach Station and Hellbühl , with Hellbühl comprising the southern part, Neuenkirch the center and Sempach Station the north of the municipality.

The largest settlement in the municipality is Neuenkirch Dorf , which has grown together with the hamlets of Nellen , Werligen , Klosterhöfli , Klösterli and Liprüti to form a long street village on the Emmenbrücke-Sursee road. The Voramstegbach flows south of the village and joins the Grosse Aa further east from the left .

To the west of Neuenkirch Dorf lies the large Neuenkircherwald , to the southwest of Lipsrüti the Lipsrüti Forest . In the square Hellbühl-Geisselermoos (southeast of the village; municipality of Emmen) -Lippenrüti-Windblosen (2.3 km southwest of the village; 759  m above sea level ) are the largest forest areas south of the Olten-Lucerne railway line . Another large forest area is the Adelwilerwald southeast of the hamlet of Adelwil (1.8 km northeast of the village; 518  m above sea level ). The railway line runs through the middle of the forest. The largest contiguous forest in the community is the Chüsenrainwald east of Trutigen (2.8 km northeast of the village; 557  m above sea level ). In total, however, only 19.6% of the municipal area is covered by forest and wood.

Large parts of the municipality are agricultural land (71.1%). This has been increased significantly over the past 150 years through the drainage of moors.

In addition to the village, Neuenkirch has numerous hamlets, groups of houses and individual farms. To the northeast of the village are the hamlets of Sellenboden (500 m northeast; 538  m above sea level ), through which the Sellenbodenbach flows, and Neuhus (1.1 km northeast; 552  m above sea level ). Weiherhüsli is on the road towards Emmenbrücke (1.5 km southeast; 548  m above sea level ). Rippertschwand ( 553  m above sea level ) is just north of it .

Further south, west of the road to Hellbühl, is the hamlet of Helfenstegen (1.7 km south; 586  m above sea level ). The hamlet of Moosschür is located where the Neuenkirch-Hellbühl road joins the Emmenbrücke-Ruswil road (2.8 km south; 570  m above sea level ). To the southwest of it is the district of Hellbühl (3.2 km south of the village; 648  m above sea level ). The Hellbühler Rotbach flows in an easterly direction south of this past.

The hamlet of Wartensee (3 km northwest of the village; 559  m above sea level ) with the castle of the same name is located on a hill southwest of Lake Sempach .

At the Sempach-Neuenkirch train station, the hamlet of Sempach Station has emerged from various hamlets over the last few decades. It is 1.8 km north of the village on the road to Sempach, but despite its name it belongs to the Neuenkirch community. Adelwil, the most important district in the Middle Ages, grew together with it (1.8 km northeast of the village; 518  m above sea level ). Here the forest stream flows from the right into the Grosse Aa. The hamlet of Gottsmännigen to the north of it has also grown together with Sempach Station . This hamlet lies between the already mentioned Grosse Aa and the Kleine Aa flowing north of it , which also flows into the Sempachersee. The third important stream that flows into the lake is the lip rütibach , which comes from the hamlet lip rüti.

North of the A2 motorway are the hamlets of Mettenwil (3.9 km northeast of the village; 568  m above sea level ) and Brämenstall (4.7 km north; 587  m above sea level ). This is the northernmost point of the municipality and is closer to Sempach and Hildisrieden than to Neuenkirch-Dorf.

Despite the numerous districts and hamlets, only 9.6% of the municipal area is settlement area.

Neuenkirch borders on Emmen LU , Hildisrieden , the city of Lucerne , Malters , Nottwil , Rain , Rothenburg , Ruswil and Sempach .

history

Because of the numerous typical Alemannic word endings, settlement during the Alemannic conquest in Switzerland (from the late 6th century) is almost certain. In a letter of protection and confirmation from Emperor Friedrich I , the Adelwile (Adelwil), Cotsmaningen (Gottsmännigen) and Loupenrouti (lip ruti) located in Neuenkircher area are mentioned for the first time in 1173. The settlement of Neuenkirch probably existed as early as the 12th century, but the place is only mentioned in 1228 in connection with a women's monastery ( Nova Ecclesia ). In 1259 a citizen of Sempach is mentioned, whose name was Burkhard and originally came from Neuenkirch (de Nuwenkilch). The monastery was originally associated with the Cistercian order and consisted of so-called Maria Magdalene sisters (or repentants) who joined the Dominican order in 1287. The monastery existed until 1588. The Habsburgs took over rule around 1300 and built Wartensee Castle to monitor traffic on the west bank and on Lake Sempach. After the battle of Sempach , the city of Lucerne took over control. Part of today's community was administered from Sempach. Most of it, however, belonged to the Rothenburg office . Neuenkirch in its current form was created in 1798, at the time of the Helvetic Republic . The community belonged to the Sempach district from 1798 to 1803 and since then to the Sursee office .

Surname

Emergence

The name is due to the building of its own church. The residents had to go to worship in the distant Oberkirch beforehand. This fact was changed by the construction of the nüwen Kilch = new church in the village.
