Herve is a small Belgian town in the Wallonia region in the Herver Land . It is located in the province of Liege in the Belgian district of Verviers .
Herve has 17,609 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and an area of 56.98 km² (according to other sources 56.84 km²), including the formerly independent towns of Battice , Bolland, Bruyères, Chaineux, Charneux, Grand-Rechain , which were incorporated in 1977 , José, Julémont, Manaihant, Xhendelesse and their hamlets.
Verviers is eight kilometers southeast, Liège 15 kilometers west, Maastricht 25 kilometers north, Aachen 25 kilometers northeast and the Belgian capital Brussels about 100 kilometers west-northwest.
history
From the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century, the Hochbank Herve belonged to the Duchy of Limburg as one of the administrative and judicial districts . As early as the 17th century, the merchants from Herve were selling their regional cheese specialty, Herver cheese , also known as Remoudou, in exchange for other goods at the trade fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig .
