The Croatian Olympic Committee ( Croat. Hrvatski olimpijski odbor) , or HOO for short, is the largest organized national sports community in Croatia . The Croatian Olympic Committee is a recognized member of the International Olympic Committee . The Croatian Olympic Committee is also a member of the ANOC , EOC , ICMG and ENGSO . President of the Croatian Olympic Committee is Mr. Zlatko Mateša . Josip Čop has been the committee's general secretary since 2005 .

history

The Olympic idea was first spread in Croatia in 1894 by Franjo Bučar . This notion that Croatia would one day become part of the Olympic family became reality when the country became independent in 1991 from the multi-ethnic state of Yugoslavia and the war in Croatia that followed shortly thereafter . The Croatian Olympic Committee was founded on September 10, 1991 in the Croatian capital Zagreb . The founding members of the Croatian Olympic Committee were 29 Croatian sports federations and 3 sports associations. The decision to accept Croatia as a member of the Olympic family was made temporarily for the first time by the International Olympic Committee on January 17, 1992 in Lausanne . Croatia's full membership was confirmed by the International Olympic Committee on September 24, 1993 in Monaco . Croatia's first participation in the Winter and Summer Olympic Games took place in 1992 in Barcelona and in Lillehammer in 1994.

Since Croatia's first participation in the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 , Croatian athletes have won a total of 20 award ceremonies at the Summer and Winter Olympic Games , including 13 at the Summer Olympic Games and 7 at the Winter Olympic Games . Croatian athletes achieved the most successes in team sports such as water polo , handball and basketball . But also in sports such as swimming , rowing , tennis and weightlifting . So far, only the siblings Janica Kostelić and Ivica Kostelić have won awards at the Olympic Winter Games .
