NGC 6347 = IC 1253 is a 13.7 mag bright barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . The object is an estimated 278 million light years from the Milky Way .
It was discovered by Truman Safford in 1866 . This first observation was unknown to Dreyer when the catalog was compiled, so Safford's second observation on June 6, 1866 under IC 1253 led to an entry in the index catalog .
