Imeľ (Hungarian Ímely - older also Imöl and the like) is a place and a municipality in Okres Komárno des Nitriansky kraj in southwestern Slovakia , with 1954 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) . According to the 2001 census, the population is mixed, with a narrow Slovak majority (52.04%), followed by Hungarians (46.52%), plus a few Czechs (0.58%).
geography
Imeľ is located in the Slovakian Danube lowlands , between the rivers Stará Nitra (old course of the Nitra ) in the west and Žitava in the east, 10 kilometers south of Nové Zámky and 20 kilometers north of Komárno .
history
The municipality has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age. The archaeological finds mainly include finds from the Ancient Bronze Age, the Migration Period and the ancient Hungarian tribes. The present place was mentioned for the first time in 1312 as Hemeu and belonged for a long time to the Archdiocese of Gran. During the Turkish wars in the 16th and 17th centuries, the place was at the front several times and was affected.
Until 1919, the place in Komorn County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia . Due to the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was again in Hungary from 1938-45.
