Virt (Hungarian Virt ) is a municipality in southwest Slovakia with 303 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in Okres Komárno , part of the Nitriansky kraj .

The community is located in the Slovakian Danube lowlands , near the old confluence of Žitava with the Danube , which also forms the state border with Hungary here. Today the Patinský canal runs near the village. The center of the village is at an altitude of 120  meters and is 17 kilometers from Komárno .

Neighboring municipalities are Marcelová in the west and north, Radvaň nad Dunajom in the east and Patince in the south.

history

Roman Catholic Church

The area of ​​Virt was settled in the Neolithic Age.

The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1256 as Werth and was at that time majority owned by Bana Castle, to a lesser extent by a nobleman named Sefrid and the archdeacon of Komorn. In 1264 Sefrid sold his share to the Archdiocese of Gran , the share of the Komorn Castle was then owned by the Wérthy family , later Bélyi , Csájághy , Huszár and Gyulay . In 1828 there were 29 houses and 158 inhabitants. Around the middle of the 19th century, Virt merged with the neighboring town of Radvaň nad Dunajom (then in Hungarian Radvány ).

Until 1918/1919 the place in Komorn County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. As a result of the First Vienna Arbitration Award , it was once again part of Hungary between 1938 and 1945.

Since 1990 Virt has been an independent municipality again.

population

According to the 2011 census, there were 285 inhabitants in Virt, including 170 Magyars , 92 Slovaks and three Czechs . Six residents indicated a different ethnic group and 14 residents gave no information about the ethnic group .

168 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 30 residents to the Reformed Church, 10 residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses, four residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident each to the Baha'itum and one to the Greek Catholic Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 30 residents had no denomination and 40 residents had no denomination.
