Jack A. Markell (born November 26, 1960 in Newark , Delaware ) is an American politician . From January 2009 to January 2017, he was governor of the state of Delaware.

Early years

Jack Markell first attended Newark High School and then studied economics and economic development at Brown University in Providence . He then continued his studies at the University of Chicago . After completing his studies, he became a successful businessman. He helped set up the Nextel company . In Chicago he worked in banking. He was also a consultant for McKinsey and Company and served on the board of Comcast Corporation .

Political career

Markell is a member of the Democratic Party . In 1998, he was against the Republican incumbent Janet C. Rzewnicki of Finance ( Treasurer elected) of the State of Delaware. In 2002 and 2006 he was confirmed in this office. In the run-up to the gubernatorial elections in 2008, he managed to secure his party's nomination as a top candidate. On November 4, 2008, he won the actual election with 67.5 percent of the vote against William Lee, the candidate of the Republican Party . This election victory is related to the general political upheaval in the United States, which was particularly reflected in the election of Barack Obama as president. Markell was elected on the same day as Obama and was also installed in his new office on the same day, January 20, 2009. In 2012 he was re-elected against Republican Jeff Cragg, increasing his share of the vote to 69.3 percent. Due to a constitutional regulation, Markell was no longer allowed to run for further re-election in 2016. Therefore, his term ends in January 2017. The previous Congressman John C. Carney was elected as his successor .

Governor Markell has two children with his wife, Carla.
