James J. "Jim" Schwartz (* 2. June 1966 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American American football - coach . He is the former head coach of the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL).

college

Schwartz began his coaching career in 1988 at the University of Maryland as an assistant defense coach with a focus on linebackers . In 1990 he moved to the University of Minnesota , again as a defense assistant . Just a year later, Schwartz moved to North Carolina Central University , this time as coach of the defensive backs . In 1992, Schwartz moved to Colgate University as a linebacker coach .

NFL

In 1993 Schwartz got an offer from the NFL from the Cleveland Browns to work with them as a scout. Schwartz accepted and worked as a Brown Scout until 1995. In 1995, Schwartz received an offer from the Baltimore Ravens to work as an assistant coach in defense, which he also accepted.

Schwartz worked for the Ravens until 1998 before the Tennessee Titans offered him a job as Defense Assistant. Schwartz accepted this offer and stayed with the Titans for a long time. Schwartz formed one of the best defenses in the NFL with the Titans, with players like Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch . Schwartz had his part in the fact that the Titans could move into Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000 , which they lost to the St. Louis Rams led by Kurt Warner . Back then, the Rams were the best team in the NFL. At 23:16, the game was lost closer than many expected. In 2001 Schwartz took over the defense of the Titans, now as a defensive coordinator . Until 2008 he held the post of defensive coordinator.

Then Schwartz got the offer of the Detroit Lions to work with them as head coach from the 2009 season and to play a decisive role in the rebuilding of the Lions. The Lions had the worst season in NFL history in the 2008 season with a record of 0:16. On January 15, 2009, he signed his first contract as head coach in the NFL with the Lions. Schwartz had previously turned down an offer from the San Francisco 49ers in 2005 . In 2008 he was also in discussion with other teams as head coach, the Atlanta Falcons , Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins wanted to sign Schwartz, but Schwartz declined the offer. On December 30, 2013, Schwartz was released from the Detroit Lions.

Since 2016 he has been Defensive Coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles , with whom he won the Super Bowl LII .
