KGHM International

On December 6, 2011, KGHM bought the Canadian company Quadra FNX Mining for $ 3.34 billion . This strengthened the subsidiary KGHM International . KGHM International currently operates 5 mines in the USA , Canada and Chile and employs around 2,500 people. Funding in North and South America is becoming increasingly important.

Robinson

Robinson is an open pit copper mine in the US state of Nevada that has existed since 1907 . Despite its over 100-year history, it is KGHM International's most productive copper mine. Smaller amounts of gold and molybdenum are produced as by-products during copper mining . In 2011 Robinson employed just under 600 people, extracting 43,000 t (95 million pounds ) of copper and 933 kg (30,000 ounces ) of gold.

The copper-gold mixture is brought by truck on Highway 50 to East Wendover, Utah , and from there on by rail.

Carlota

The Carlota opencast mine is located in the US state of Arizona . In 2012, 11,340 tons (25 million pounds) of cathode copper were extracted. It was originally supposed to be closed in 2012. The closure has been postponed and a new date has not yet been set as it depends on many factors.

Franke

The Franke mine is located in northern Chile in the Región de Antofagasta (Region II). In 2011, 640 employees extracted about 14,970 tons (33 million pounds) of cathode copper.

McCreedy West and Levack

The Morrison deposit is located in Sudbury , Ontario , Canada. In 2002 KGHM International acquired the Levack and McCreedy West mines. the Morrison camp was discovered in February 2005 through exploration work in Levack. Copper and nickel were mined again in Levack, and nickel production was stopped at the end of 2009. A cooperation agreement was concluded with the Swiss mining group Xstrata .

An agreement was signed with Xstrata for the extraction from the Morrison warehouse, which allows KGHM to use the infrastructure of the neighboring Xstrata mine in Craig. This increases the profitability of their own plants for both companies and allows the economical extraction of ores with a comparatively low copper or nickel content for KGHM.

Large nickel and copper deposits and smaller platinum, palladium and gold deposits were discovered in McCreedy West in 2002. In 2005 the production of copper, nickel and platinum began. At the end of 2008, the production of nickel was stopped for price reasons.

From the end of 2008, therefore, only copper was mined until mining stopped in 2011 because the copper content of the remaining ore reserves was too low. In July 2011, another agreement was signed with Xstrata. The copper ore from McCreedy West is now being processed by Xstrata in the nearby Strathcona processing plant .
