Kinabatangan or Kota Kinabatangan is a city in the Malaysian state of Sabah . It belongs to the administrative district of the same name ( Kinabatangan District ) and is 132 kilometers southwest of Sandakan as the crow flies. The city is part of the Sandakan Division area , which includes the districts of Beluran , Kinabatangan , Sandakan, and Tongod .

Demographics

The city's population is 10,256 people according to the last census. As in many other cities in Sabah, there are significant numbers of illegal immigrants from the nearby Philippines , especially from Sulu and Mindanao , who are not recorded in the population statistics.

The city derives its name from the nearby Sungai Kinabatangan River . The area around the river consists of rainforest. The terrain is wet and damp and the swampy lowlands are home to the proboscis monkey .

The Kinabatangan region is also home to the Gomantong Caves , a highly branched cave system known for the species of bats and salangans , swallow-like birds that live there , whose nests are the main ingredient in the so-called swallow's nest soup .

economy

Economic activities in the Kinabatangan area are focused on the planting of oil palms , forestry operations and the timber industry.
