Podilsk ( Ukrainian Подільськ ; Russian Подольск Podolsk , Romanian Bârzula ) is a city in southern Ukraine with about 40,000 inhabitants.
Podilsk is located about 168 km northwest of Odessa and forms an independent unit within the Odessa Oblast ( independent city - city under oblast administration). The city is completely enclosed by the Podilsk Raion , of which it is the administrative center.
The city was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1779, at that time there was a village in place of the city, which was called Birsula ( Бірзула ) until 1935 . The village developed quickly through the construction of a railway line, which had a train station near the village; In 1938 it received city status, and between 1924 and 1940 it was part of the Moldovan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic .
In 1935 the village was renamed Kotovsk (Ukrainian Котовськ ; Russian Котовск ). The name is derived from the Soviet commander Grigori Kotowski , who died in the village in 1925 and for whom a mausoleum that has been preserved to this day was built here. The place bore this name until May 12, 2016 and was then renamed Podilsk in the course of the so-called Ukrainian decommunization .
Personalities
In 1927 the Ukrainian scientist and politician Walentyn Shurskyj was born there.
