history

St. Cyriakus in the town center

The history of Weeze goes back a long way. Individual evidence of the earliest settlement in this area goes back to the Palaeolithic / Mesolithic. A burial ground with around 1000 hills in the Kalbeck area, the famous copper ax from Baal, settlement finds in the Hees, remains of the Roman road Cologne-Nijmegen and an important Roman silver coin find from the following epochs . In the center of the village there is a Franconian burial ground dating from around 600–700 AD. The oldest archaeologically recorded relics (graves, predecessor buildings) under today's St. Cyriakus church are dated to the 8th to 9th centuries AD.

The first documentary evidence of part of today's municipality comes from the year 855, when King Lothar II donated the Villa Geizefurt farm complex east of the Niers to Count Palatine Ansfried . This Villa Geizefurt was an extensive property in the Carolingian era, which was mainly in the area of today's Kalbeck farmers; its core, the main courtyard Geizefurt, can be identified with the modern Büssenhof. Weeze himself was probably mentioned in writing around 1100 as Wise , the first safe mention was made in 1226, when the Lord of the Alps, Heinrich III., Gave the Cistercian monastery of Kamp a farm in the Weez farmers Vornick.

In the Geldern district, founded in 1816, Weeze was the seat of the mayor's office of Weeze , which, in addition to Weeze, also included the two communities of Kalbeck and Wissen . The eponymous Kalbeck and the farmers of the same name belonged to the municipality of Kalbeck . The municipality of knowledge among the eponymous castle hotel and the peasantry Hüdderath, Keylaer and Laar. The communities Kalbeck and Wissen were incorporated into Weeze on October 1, 1928.

On December 5, 1944, almost all of the Weezers were evacuated to Thuringia. In February 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War , the bloody battle raged in the nearby Klever Reichswald and in the vicinity of Weeze . On February 24, 1945, Wehrmacht soldiers blew up the steeple of the parish church of St. Cyriakus. On March 2, 1945, British and Canadian troops occupied Weeze. The center of Weezer, which was 80 percent destroyed, was rebuilt and renovated. The Weeze war cemetery has existed since 1950.

Holy Cross Church in Wemb

The district of Wemb in Weez is located near the German-Dutch border and has about 1000 inhabitants. The district is dominated by agriculture; in the middle is the three-aisled parish church Heilig Kreuz , built from 1889 to 1893 , a brick building. It houses art objects from the old Marienwater monastery in Weez , which was secularized by the French in 1802 .

Club life in Wemb is lively. A community center was completed in 1992. The area of the Baaler Bruch along the Dutch border was swampy until it was drained and later used as arable land or pastureland. Workers from the Catholic workers 'colony St. Petrusheim, which was set up in Baal in 1902 on the initiative of Peter Klausener and the Rhenish Association for Catholic workers' colonies , played a part in this. St. Petrusheim helps homeless people in need to this day. The Baal meeting place is open to all local associations and foreign youth groups who want to find relaxation in Baaler Bruch.

Today's palace in the historicism style was built between 1906 and 1910 by Friedrich von Vittinghoff . Its predecessor building was about one kilometer from the current location and was first mentioned in writing in 1326 as "hoff te Calbeke". It was completely destroyed by two fires. The newly built castle was also badly damaged by fire in February 1945, but was partially rebuilt in the post-war period. In the course of this work, a rose garden based on baroque models was created, which was open to the public on the first two Sundays in July until 1997 as part of the Kalbeck rose shows .
