Parookaville (abbreviated PV ) is a three day music festival in the area of electronic dance music , which since 2015 every year in mid-July at the airport of Weeze is taking place. With a total of 210,000 visitors in 2019, it is one of the largest festivals in Europe. Parookaville is known for its elaborately designed show concept, in which the festival is staged as a separate city.

From 2011 to 2014, Bernd Dicks and two friends first organized beach parties in downtown Weez before they founded Parookaville. In doing so, they initially oriented the implementation of the first edition on Tomorrowland . Musically, especially through the cooperation with 1Live and the Bootshaus , all genres of electronic dance music are represented, and a show concept is presented thematically. In addition to the open-air stages, including the 200 m wide main stage, there are other stages in hangars, shelters and bunkers on the airport site. After the first edition, Parookaville received several awards and developed into Germany's most popular dance event in the first three years due to the predominantly positive reviews and increasing visitor numbers. The majority of the 85,000 tickets are regularly sold out within a few hours. The main reason for this is the detailed implementation of the festival concept. Of the 70,000 daily visitors, 40,000 spend the weekend on the two-part campsite and are supplied by a specially built supermarket. The festival is accompanied by television, radio and its own live stream. In addition, Parookaville gained media attention through its unusual and sometimes humorous actions such as DJ appearances by comedians, the annual wedding or the engagement of small people as bartenders.

History and motivation

The initiator of the festival is Bernd Dicks (born July 21, 1982 ) from Weeze . As a reporter for 1Live he reported on major festivals around the world and discovered his enthusiasm for electronic music as well as a “hunger among young people for a festival show concept like at Tomorrowland.” Dicks, who witnessed the Love Parade disaster as a festival reporter, explained his motives to plan another major event:

“After the Love Parade, there was a real vacuum in the electronic festival landscape. The hunger for something new was great. "

- Bernd Dicks : Aachen newspaper

In order to initially liven up the event culture in his hometown, he organized an annual beach party from 2011 together with his two friends Norbert Bergers and Georg van Wickeren. With the last 5,000 visitors in 2014, the Weezer Rathausplatz was too small as an event location, so the area at the airport was considered. The hardstyle festival Q-Base has been held there for many years . In the same year the idea of Parookaville was born. The three founders worked on the festival concept for the next two years. Bergers and van Wickeren, retail property developers by profession, brought their expertise in technical areas such as statics , fire protection and evacuation into the planning. Dicks had experience in dealing with artists through his work on the radio. Ulrich Rauschenberger, who is the booker responsible for artist acquisition at the boathouse , has also been involved in the concept from the start. The Tomorrowland Festival as well as Mysteryland and Electric Daisy Carnival served as role models . In order not to copy the Tomorrowland show concept, which is based on a mystical natural world, the concept of a city of its own was developed. Only the same stage builder was hired for the main stage of the first 2015 edition.

City elements

Parookaville is based on the idea of a city that comes to life once a year. It is named after the fictional founding father Bill Parooka . In fact, the name Parookaville comes from the indie film Palookaville and the Fatboy Slim album of the same name . Instead of tickets, visas are sold to guests, who are then referred to as citizens. The festival site is divided into city districts and numerous elements of a city can be found:

  • Town Hall: The Town Hall , each visitor will receive a passport, which is stamped annually. For participating in attractions on the site, such as B. Bungee jumping , more stamps can be collected. It also serves as an information point and lost property office.
  • Church: In the Warsteiner Parooka Church a couple is civilly married every year before the festival starts . Prominent guests from the line-up such as Tujamo , Phil Fuldner , Alle Farben and MC Fitti act as best man . A same-sex couple married for the first time in 2019. Festival guests can also get married unofficially, so in 2019, in addition to the civil wedding, 2000 more were closed. There were also 10 marriage proposals. The Las Vegas-style wooden chapel was built by a Weezer joinery .
  • Post office: The post office can be sent postcards, which are provided with an official special Deutsche Post.
  • Bank: The festival's payment system is based on tokens. These are exchanged at counters in the Bank of Parookaville .
  • Prison: The Jail is a tattoo parlor, several tattoo artists working in the cells.
  • Pool: The Bermuda Square is a 700-square-foot swimming pool with a view of the second stage. It is supervised by the DLRG Weeze.

Other city elements that fulfill organizational tasks or include attractions are a fair, city forest, marketplace, hardware store, boulevard, dentist, ear doctor, beer garden, memorial and a police station.

Musically

Parookaville's music program includes representatives from every genre of electronic dance music. The performing artists are a mixture of international star DJs and local musicians who play on up to 12 stages. So-called stagehosts are usually responsible for the daily line-up. These are music labels or DJs who represent (“host”) a stage on the respective day. On the basis of the stage host, the stage program is thematically oriented or influenced by it. This ensures that only artists of a certain genre such as big room, trap, deep house, hard style, trance or techno play on the respective stages per day. For example, DJs such as Felix Jaehn or Robin Schulz perform on the stage hosted by 1Live, as their productions are regularly part of the radio station's program. Overall, the musical design is aimed at an audience with an average age of 25 years. Some humorous artists appear on the smaller stages, for example there were DJ appearances by Oliver Pocher and Menderes .

Among the headliners who have played on every issue, including Steve Aoki , Felix Jaehn , Martin Solveig , Yellow Claw , DVBBS and Eastern Bloc sluts . Artists with four appearances include Armin van Buuren , Fedde Le Grand , Robin Schulz , Lost Frequencies , Headhunterz and Laidback Luke (as of 2019). Resident DJs of the festival are the hardstyle project Lost Identity as well as house producer and DJ FRDY .

Pre-parties

The festival starts on Thursdays with a pre-party on the camping area, and a small part of the festival area is open. In addition, Parookaville organizes a series of parties called Club Circus in various clubs in Germany throughout the year . Headliners of the festival like Tiësto and Timmy Trumpet play the editions in the Cologne boathouse in particular . With the Megafestival , the festival organized another series of events in the 2019 summer season on Mallorca. Different DJs like Brennan Heart or W&W played in the Megapark every day .

organization

The festival is planned all year round by Parookaville GmbH with 30 permanent employees. It is based in an office building in Weeze. Up to 6,000 people work on the site during the event.

safety

Due to the proximity to the airport, higher security precautions apply for events. Originally it was possible to build on the security concept of the Q-Base. Two meteorologists work on site in order to react appropriately to storms . They receive further weather data from the airport. The visitors are informed about safety notices on video walls and can receive breaking news via app on their mobile phones. Three mobile hospitals and three emergency doctors are stationed on the festival site, and ambulances and medical supplies are being increased in Weeze.

Infrastructure

The journey is regulated according to its own traffic concept, which is based on one-way streets and is implemented by several transport service providers. Airport guests are redirected to their own route. Special and night trains of the NordWestBahn run from Düsseldorf and the Ruhr area to Weeze station. A shuttle service connects the festival with the train station and the hotels. There are also bicycle parking spaces and 50 farmers are available for towing services. The neighboring airport is also available for travel, especially for performing artists. In 2019, twelve DJs chose this option and landed there with their private jet.

The site is neither connected to the electricity grid nor to the sewer system. The power supply is secured via specially laid power cables and generator sets. The wastewater, at peak times up to 100 m³ / h, is pumped out and transported to local sewage treatment plants. The water consumption of 75 l / day and the total consumption of 500,000 kWh correspond to average household values per person.

Telekom and Vodafone are setting up mobile cell phone towers for a better cell phone network connection.

camping

The campsite is divided into two areas: the closer base ground and the quieter Mellow Fields with play areas . There are also areas for Comfort, Deluxe and Caravan Camping. To counteract the garbage problem, a garbage deposit is levied. Some of the tents left behind are recycled or sold for a good cause.

The world's largest penny market is located on the site . These are two 2400 m² and 1800 m² large branches in which 30,000 customers are supplied around the clock every day. The Penny Market, for example, sells 40,000 pizzas, 68 tons of ice cubes, approx. 13,000 bananas and generates as much sales as a normal branch in six months. Penny also acts as the stage host of the stage located in the camping area.

Local

An important concern of the organizers is the involvement of the local population. Local associations are involved in the development and local companies are preferred. 50% of the catering facilities are companies from the region. Residents of Weeze receive discounted tickets and can take part in a site tour the day before. Direct residents receive free tickets. All in all, orders worth € 7.2 million were awarded to domestic companies. In addition, all hotels in the region are occupied during the festival period.

The equal opportunities officers of the neighboring communities are represented with a stand.

network

Parookaville has been part of the Superstruct network, to which Sziget and elrow belong , since 2019 through an investment and partnership agreement .

Stages

The festival will be held at a former Royal Air Force military airport, which is part of Weeze Airport. Some stages are being set up in former shelters at the military airport. In addition to the stages shown below, there are also several small bunkers.

Main stage

The main stage is redesigned every year and the design is kept secret until shortly before the start of the festival. For the first three years, the Tomorrowland stage builders were commissioned. Since 2017, the main stage has been located in a 70,000 m² area called “The Arena” and offers space for 45,000 spectators. Stefan Dicks, brother of festival initiator Bernd Dicks, has been responsible for the design since 2018. The 2018 stage, called “The Audiotory”, was a communication station and, with a width of 200 m, was the largest festival stage in Europe. In 2019 the motif was a zeppelin and again the largest stage in Europe. Parts of the previous year will be integrated into the side stages.

Bill's Factory

The design of this open-air stage is based on the fictional founder Bill Parooka . It was built in 2016 as the main stage and then served as the second largest stage. Since then, it is the only stage that has remained largely unchanged and has only received technical improvements. Bill's Factory is best known for its live artists.

Cloud factory

The Cloud Factory is the largest indoor stage and is located in a hangar. In the first year it was still called Town Hall .

Power Plant & Time Lab

These two stages are located in the former shelters of the military airfield. Until 2018 they were called Center or East Shelter . In the first two editions also hosted the North Shelter a stage.

Desert Valley Stage

The stage has been located in a sand bunker in the expanded area since 2018. The pre-party takes place here on Thursdays. During the festival, the stage is mainly used by techno, deep house and psytrance artists.

Wacky Shack

Wacky Shack is a bunker for 150 people and functions as a "club without rules". The "minibar" is located here. The comedians also perform here.

Brain wash

In this garage there are 40 washing machines with foam cannons as decoration. It is also called laundromat and unusual artists such as MC Fitti or Evil Jared perform for EDM festivals .

expenditure

2015

The first edition was originally designed for a number of 18,000 visitors. Due to the high demand for tickets, the campsites had to be increased from 7,000 to 12,000. To this end, renegotiations were carried out with local farmers. The capacity limit was 25,000, so the festival was sold out shortly before the start. Comparisons in advance with the Tomorrowland Festival resulted in high expectations of the visitors. Despite initial organizational difficulties, the premiere received positive feedback from visitors, artists and specialist magazines. In particular, the successful concept and the open handling of criticism by the organizers were highlighted. The festival received several awards in the first year.

2016

For the second edition, the capacity for visitors was increased significantly from 25,000 to 40,000 per day. For this purpose, the festival area was expanded from 65,000 m² to 80,000 m². The 50,000 tickets available were offset by 60,000 registrations from all over Europe, so the festival was sold out within three days. At the time, no name of the line-up was known. During the ticket sale, there was a server attack on the ticket service provider, which massively delayed the sale.

The main stage was again built by the Tomorrowland stage builders. The 80 × 30 m new construction has been used exclusively by Parookaville since then.

Due to the previous year’s criticism of the sanitary facilities, water-flushed negative pressure toilets were now used.

2017

Mainstage 2017 in the newly developed area The Arena

In the third year the festival took place for the first time over three days. In addition, the capacity was increased by a third to 60,000 visitors a day. For this purpose, a 70,000 m² sand pit was newly developed, which offered space for the 110 m wide main stage “factory”. A roller coaster was also built on the site, which was available to visitors along with other rides. After 100,000 pre-registrations, 72,000 of the 80,000 tickets were sold out in four hours and sold out within two days in November. After three years Parookaville is Germany's largest electronic festival and one of the five largest in general. In order to prevent black market trading, the tickets were personalized and a separate platform was set up for resale.

The festival closing on the main stage was played by David Guetta, while Paul Kalkbrenner completed the second stage. For the first time there was also a hardstyle stage.

The festival was accompanied by heavy rain, so that there were significant problems on arrival and departure. After an accident on the A57 on the first day resulted in long waiting times, many cars got stuck in the mud on the last day. The shuttle service was also criticized. Many guests had to stay a day longer than planned. The program was extended by two hours and the cars had to be pulled out with tractors.

The Dutch hardstyle trio Showtek provided a positive highlight . Their tribute to Chester Bennington , who died the day before, reached over 50 million people. A video of the appearance of Alle Farben , which bridged a rain-related power failure with a spontaneous jam session , received a lot of media attention.

2018

Mainstage 2018 during the appearance of Timmy Trumpet

Although over 100,000 people have pre-registered again, the number of tickets remained constant at 80,000 compared to the previous year. 90% of these were sold within two hours. The festival was later sold out for the fourth time in a row.

Due to the traffic problems of the last year, the transport service provider was replaced. There were also two separate camping areas. The community invested € 30,000 in fighting oak processionary moths on the campsite.

For the first time, the star DJs Martin Garrix and Hardwell were able to win over for the closing. Another highlight was the appearance of KSHMR . He had already arrived a few days in advance for his live show with 20 Indian artists and rented a rehearsal room. This show took place for the second time , alongside Ultra Miami .

There was a high temperature drought during the festival . Due to the low groundwater level , water was temporarily only available to a limited extent and was brought in with tank trucks. 35 people had to receive medical care during the long waiting times in front of the camping site.

Part of the festival was the “Minibar”, where the small stature served shots (“short ones”). The Federal Association of Small People and Their Families (BKMF) criticized this and complained to the public order office. After an examination, the latter declared the action permissible. In addition, star chef Björn Freitag ran The Golden Roof restaurant in front of the main stage.

2019

For the fifth anniversary, the number of tickets was increased slightly to 85,000. The camping area has been reduced in size while the number of day visitors has increased. There was also a new entry system to reduce waiting times for camping guests. Once again, 90% of the tickets were sold out within two hours, some categories within a few minutes. With 70,000 visitors a day, Parookaville was bigger than Tomorrowland for the first time.

The headliners included The Chainsmokers, who played in the first edition - back then as a newcomer on a side stage. The joint appearance of the hip-hop duo 257ers with the brass pop band Querbeat marked a highlight of the festival.

The finals on the three largest stages were played by DJ Snake, Alan Walker and Paul van Dyk. Headliner Steve Aoki was represented with a catering stand of his own brand Pizzaoki , as was the “Minibar” again.

The Nordwestbahn canceled all night trains at short notice due to a lack of locomotive drivers, so that the departure was regulated by rail replacement services .

2020

When tickets were pre-sold in October 2019, 80% of the 85,000 tickets were sold within the first two hours. A few weeks later, the organizer announced the first names from the line-up. This included DJs like Armin van Buuren and Steve Aoki as well as, for the first time, Illenium , Rezz and, as headliners, Scooter . During the corona pandemic in March 2020, Parookaville hosted a re-livestream of the festival from the previous year to support the appeal to stay home. On April 16, the 2020 event was finally canceled. Ticket holders had the choice between a refund of the tickets or a reservation for the next edition in 2021. 70% decided to keep the tickets. Because of this, and because an insurance policy took effect, Parookaville did not need any financial help from a rescue package. During the originally scheduled date, a replacement event took place on the festival site under the motto LIVE from the City . In addition, a small part of the festival was built and the performances of some DJs were streamed. On both days, 100 guests, who were determined by a raffle, were able to take part, taking into account infection protection. The annual wedding also took place. At the same time, ticket sales for the next edition began.

media

Parookaville is accompanied annually by TV and radio. The ProSieben boulevard magazine taff broadcasts from its own studio on the festival site. 1live is also on site with its own radio container, from which Daniel Danger and Lari Luke broadcast live. A live broadcast of the DJ performances was realized in 2018 by Telekom MagentaTV in 360 ° production. In 2019 it was broadcast on its own YouTube channel. 7.5 million viewers followed the live stream. In addition, some DJ sets are uploaded to the channel afterwards.

The aftermovie shows the most beautiful scenes of the festival and is viewed in the millions every year. In 2019 the obligatory aftermovie was supplemented by an afterseries. Different facets of the festival were presented in eleven parts. A newspaper with information and reports is distributed daily on the site. In the run-up to the festival, ticket holders will also receive a copy of the Parookaville Post with preliminary reports. The editor in charge is DJMag Germany.

In 2019 WDR filmed a documentary about the festival entitled The perfect 96 - hour party? . Part of the VOX documentation DJs - The New Superstars was already recorded at Parookaville 2015.

review

The growth story of the festival is considered unparalleled in the German festival landscape. Within three years Parookaville has become a highlight of the European festival season for visitors and DJs. Trade magazines such as Dance-Charts and DJ Mag see reasons for this rapid success in the unique concept. The "attention to detail" with which this concept is implemented is regularly highlighted. Internationally, Parookaville is compared to Tomorrowland and was dubbed “German Tomorrowland” by the press. The jury declared that they won the LEA Award 2015:

“A modern, electronic“ Woodstock ”:“ Parookaville ”[...] that is in no way inferior to the Belgian model“ Tomorrowland ”. [...] The idea and implementation of the whole spectacle was so well thought out and professional that the sold-out sign was hanging in front of the door within a very short time. "

- LEA Award 2015 : Explanation of the winner

According to surveys, Parookaville has the highest scores with a 93% satisfaction rate and 94% return intention ahead of Tomorrowland, Rock am Ring and Lollapalooza. The police rate the festival as "absolutely peaceful".

Remarks

  1. The way in which the number of visitors is counted is inconsistent. The international counting method customary in the industry adds up the daily visitors for all days (“Total Attendance”). The number of different visitors ("unique visitors") corresponds to the number of tickets and results when both day and weekend tickets are sold. See the explanations of the specialist magazine DJ Mag here and Bernd Dicks here . For a detailed list of visitor numbers, see the relevant section.
