The district of Chiayi ( Chinese 嘉義 縣 , Pinyin Jiāyì Xiàn , Tongyong Pinyin Jiayì Siàn , W.-G. Chia-i Hsien ) is a district of the Republic of China in Taiwan . It is located in the west of the island of Taiwan and encloses the city of Chiayi , which was spun off from the district in 1982 and received the status of an independent city. Since then, the county administration has been located in Taibao, west of Chiayi .
history
During the Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan (1895-1945), the area of the later district was part of the Tainan Prefecture from 1920 . After Taiwan was taken over by the Republic of China , the Japanese administrative units were essentially continued under different names and in January 1946 the Tainan district emerged from the Tainan prefecture , but without the two cities of Tainan and Chiayi, which were spun off as independent cities. On October 25, 1950, a new administrative reform took place and the northern parts of the county of Tainan were split off as the new counties of Chiayi and Yunlin . The city of Chiayi lost its district freedom again and was re-incorporated into the district of Chiayi. On July 1, 1982, however, Chiayi regained the status of an independent city. The district capital was then Taibao.
geography
Chiayi County is located between Yunlin County in the north and Tainan City in the south. It borders on Formosa Road to the west, Nantou County to the northeast and Kaohsiung City to the southeast .
The western part of the county belongs to the Jianan Plain , the largest plain in Taiwan. In the east lies the Alishan Mountains, which are made accessible to tourists by the Alishan Forest Railway . At its eastern tip, the district of Chiayi extends to Yushan , Taiwan's highest mountain at 3,952 m. The eastern tip of the Chiayi county area is part of the Yushan National Park .
The northern tropic , considered the border between the subtropical and tropical climatic zones , runs through the middle of the Chiayi district.

Symbols of the district
Like the other counties and some cities in Taiwan, Chiayi County has made certain animals and plants official circle symbols. In 1985, after a survey, the magnolia was selected as the flower of the district. In 1999 a survey was carried out as to which bird should become the bird of the district. Three birds were shortlisted: the Swinhoefasan , the blood pyrole ( Oriolus traillii ) and the Taiwanese blue-tailed ( Tarsiger johnstoniae ), with the choice falling on the former. In 2000, out of five different proposals ( maple , formosa juniper , garcinia , African tulip tree , and bubble ash ), the latter was chosen as the district's official tree.
