Lars Rønningen
Lars Rønningen (born November 24, 1965 in Oslo ) is a former Norwegian wrestler . He was vice- world champion in 1989 and European champion in the Greco-Roman style in paper weight in 1988 and 1992 .
Career
Lars Rønningen comes from a wrestling family, his father was a wrestler and weightlifter and his brother Jon Rønningen, who is three years older than him, is a two-time Olympic champion . He started wrestling as a teenager in 1976. At first he belonged to the ring sports club Oslo Bryteklubb (BK) , later he moved together with his brother to the sports club Kolbotn IL . At a height of 1.53 meters, it had the ideal mass for the weight of paper, the lightest weight class, which had its weight limit of 48 kg. He wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style.
His international career began in 1980. At the age of 15 he became Junior World Champion in Stockholm in the weight class up to 42 kg body weight. A year later he took 6th place at the Junior World Championship (Juniors = age group up to 18 years of age) in Vancouver in paper weight behind Mark Fuller , USA , Magyatdin Allachwerdijew , Soviet Union , Bratan Zenow , Bulgaria , Bernd Scherer , FRG and Vincenzo Maenza from Italy . How strong this championship was, one can see that of these wrestlers in the following years Maenza Olympic champion , Allachwerdijew and Zenow world champion , Bernd Scherer vice- European champion , Mark Fuller Pan-American champion and Lars Rønningen vice- world champion and double European champion the seniors should be.
Lars Rønningen's debut in the seniors was an 11th place at the 1981 World Cup in Oslo . He lost his two fights there in paper weight against Ferenc Seres from Hungary and Salih Bora from Turkey . This was followed by a good 4th place in paper weight with the still only seventeen-year-old at the 1982 European Championships in Varna , which was behind Wassili Anikin , Soviet Union, Csaba Vadász , Hungary and Totju Andonow from Bulgaria , but ahead of Markus Scherer from Germany.
In 1984 Lars Rønningen took part in the Olympic Games for the first time. He started in Los Angeles again in paper weight, but lost there to Markus Scherer from Germany (4:14 technical points) and Ikazu Saito from Japan (2:14 technical points) and therefore only came in 9th place.
In the next few years, Lars Rønningen improved both in his technical ability and in terms of strength. He thus created better and better conditions for himself to be among the world's best in the years to come. This was already evident in 1986, when he finished 4th at both the European Championships in Athens and the World Championships in Budapest . At the European Championships in Athens he succeeded a. a. a shoulder victory over Markus Scherer , who was a silver medalist at the 1984 Olympic Games. However, he lost the fight for third place against Vincenzo Maenza on points (0:14). At the World Championships in Budapest he lost in the pool final against Bratan Zenow . He lost the fight for third place against Reynaldo Jimenez from Cuba .
In 1987 Lars Rønningen won his first medal at international senior championships. At the 1987 World Cup in Clermont-Ferrand , he came in third place in paper weight behind Magyatdin Allachwerdijew and Vincenzo Maenza . This success was followed by the first title win in 1988, because he became European champion in paper weight in Kolbotn, where he achieved a narrow point victory over the Russian Sergei Suvorov in the final battle . At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , Lars Rønningen suffered a severe setback, as he came there after a high point defeat by Vincenzo Maenza (0:11 technical points), a narrow point victory over Mark Fuller (6: 4 technical points) . Points) and another high point defeat against Bratan Zenow (4:16 points) not among the ten best wrestlers. Unfortunately, its exact location cannot be determined.
At the European Championships in 1989 in Oulu , things didn't go much better for him, because he only came in 9th place in the flyweight division. For this, at the World Championships in 1989 he succeeded in Martigny again a great success, because he was there in the paper weight behind Oleg Kucherenko from the USSR Vice World Champion . He lost the final against Kutscherenko but clearly with 3:14 techn. Points.
In 1990 Lars Rønningen took a break from the international championships. In 1991 he only started at the World Championships in Varna , where he lost his first bantamweight fight. Due to a rule change by the FILA, he was eliminated and ended up in 25th place.
In 1992 he won the European paper weight title again at the European Championships in Copenhagen . In the final of his pool he defeated it Safar Gulijew from the CIS and in the final of this championship Iliuță Dăscălescu from Romania . In the same year, however, his third attempt to win a medal at the Olympic Games failed, because he lost to Oleg Kutscherenko in Barcelona , then came to a victory over Masanori Ohashi from Japan and was eliminated after another defeat against Wilber Sánchez from Cuba and came only in 7th place.
In 1993 Lars Rønningen completed his successful career with a 4th place in the flyweight division at the European Championships in Istanbul . He lost the battle for the bronze medal against Samwel Danieljan from Russia.
Lars Rønningen, who had learned the profession of chimney sweep, resigned after this championship, but stayed in wrestling as a youth coach in Oslo.
