The men's pole vault at the European Athletics Championships in 1966 was held on August 31 and September 2, 1966 in Budapest's Népstadion .

European champion was the European record holder Wolfgang Nordwig from the GDR. He won ahead of the Greek Christos Papanikolaou . Bronze went to the French Hervé d'Encausse .

Record improvement

European champion Wolfgang Nordwig improved the championship record in the final on September 2nd by 30 centimeters to 5.10 meters. Germany Democratic Republic 1949GDR

Paul Coppejans were eight inches short of entering the final

The 27 participants took part in a joint qualifying round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 4.60 m. Since only five athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athletes (highlighted in light green). So finally sixteen jumpers who had jumped at least 4.40 m reached the final.
