Preliminary round

September 16, 1969, 6:10 p.m.

The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first two athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final.

The division of the preliminary runs with an overall thin participation was not exactly happy. The fifteen middle distance athletes could have been divided into five athletes each over three runs. Instead, there were six participants in the first race, five in the second and four in the third.
