The 3,000-meter run for women at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held on August 29 and September 1, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .

The world champion was the Vice European Champion of 1986 over 1500 meters Tetjana Samolenko from the Soviet Union , who also secured the world championship title over 1500 meters five days later . Silver went to the Romanian Olympic champion in 1984 and two-time Vice-European Champion ( 1982 /1986) maricica puică , who won in 1984 and Olympic bronze in 1500 meters. Third place was taken by Ulrike Bruns from the GDR , third in the 1976 Olympics over 1500 meters and third in the European Championship in 1986 over 10,000 meters .
