The women's javelin at the World Athletics Championships 1987 was held on September 5 and 6, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .
The British vice world champion from 1983 and reigning European champion Fatima Whitbread became world champion . She won ahead of the world record holder and Vice European Champion from 1986 Petra Felke , later Petra Meier, from the GDR . Bronze went to the German thrower Beate Peters .

The existing World Cup record was improved three times in the final on September 6th:
- 71.76 m - Petra Felke ( GDR ), 2nd attempt
- 73.16 m - Fatima Whitbread ( Great Britain ), 4th attempt

qualification
5th September 1987
31 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 64.00 m. Five athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the seven next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). In the end, 60.78 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
