The shot put women at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics was on 5 and 7 August 1997 in the Olympic Stadium of the Greek capital Athens held.
In this competition, the German shot putters won two medals, gold and bronze. The defending champion, Olympic champion in 1996 , European champion in 1990 and vice European champion in 1994 Astrid Kumbernuss became world champion . Ukrainian Wita Pavlysch came in second . Bronze went to Stephanie Storp .

25 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 18.80 m. Three athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the nine next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 17.89 m was enough for the final.
