The men's javelin throw at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 3 and 5, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .

World champion was the South African Marius Corbett , which was quite a surprise. Like two years earlier , the British Olympic runner-up in 1996 and Olympic third in 1992 Steve Backley won the silver medal. Bronze went to the Greek Konstandinos Gatsioudis .

qualification

Forty participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 83.00 m. Three athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the nine next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 80.30 m had to be achieved for the final.
