Lincoln County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . 20,497 inhabitants live here. The county seat is Carrizozo . The county is named after former President Abraham Lincoln .
In Lincoln County the Lincoln County Cattle War took place in the late 1870s , in which Billy the Kid was also involved.

The county covers an area of 12,513 square kilometers; of which 1 square kilometer (0.01 percent) is water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Torrance County , Guadalupe County , De Baca County , Chaves County , Otero County , Sierra County, and Socorro County .

One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Lincoln Historic District . A total of 21 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 17, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , the county had 19,411 people. There were 8,202 households and 5,634 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.60% White, 0.35% African American, 1.95% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 11.28% other races Groups; 2.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 25.63% of the population.
Of the 8,202 households, 26.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.60% were married couples living together, 9.30% were single mothers. 31.30% were not families. 26.70% are single households and 10.00% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.80.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.70% of residents under 18 years of age, 6.00% between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.20% between 25 and 44 years of age, 30.20% between 45 and 64 years of age 17.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 95.90 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,886 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,035. Males had a median income of $ 27,323 versus $ 19,923 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,338. 14.90% of the population and 10.80% of families are below the poverty line. 24.70% of these were under 18 years of age and 8.70% were 65 years of age or older.
