Lincoln County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . 20,497 inhabitants live here. The county seat is Carrizozo . The county is named after former President Abraham Lincoln .

In Lincoln County the Lincoln County Cattle War took place in the late 1870s , in which Billy the Kid was also involved.

The county covers an area of ​​12,513 square kilometers; of which 1 square kilometer (0.01 percent) is water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Torrance County , Guadalupe County , De Baca County , Chaves County , Otero County , Sierra County, and Socorro County .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 19,411 people. There were 8,202 households and 5,634 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.60% White, 0.35% African American, 1.95% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 11.28% other races Groups; 2.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 25.63% of the population.
