According to the 2000 census , the county had 10,184 people. There were 4,151 households and 2,914 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.64% White, 0.23% African American, 1.63% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, and 0.58% other races Groups; 1.61% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.88% of the population.
Of the 4,151 households, 29.30% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.90% were married couples living together, 6.40% were single mothers. 29.80% were not families. 26.00% were single households and 12.30% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 5.20% between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.20% between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.40% between 45 and 64 years of age 19.00% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 98.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.70 males.
