List of nuclear power plants in North America
This is a list of the nuclear power plants in North America . An overview of all nuclear power plants can be found under List of Nuclear Power Plants .
North America
In North America , 64 nuclear power plants with 119 reactor blocks and a total installed capacity of around 117 GW are on the grid in three countries. 42 reactor blocks in two countries with a total gross output of 18.1 GW have already been shut down.
In North America, the Vallecitos reactor block in the USA was the first to go into operation on October 19, 1957. The first reactor block at Nine Mile Point in the United States was commissioned on November 9, 1969 and is the oldest still in use. The Bruce nuclear power plant in Canada is currently the most powerful with six reactor blocks and an installed gross capacity of 4.7 GW. The three reactor blocks of Palo Verde in the USA are the most powerful with a gross output of 1.40 GW each.
Canada
Four nuclear power plants with 19 reactor blocks and a total installed capacity of 14.3 GW are in operation in Canada . The Point Lepreau NPP is located in the Canadian province of New Brunswick , the other three in Ontario . Three nuclear power plants with six reactor blocks and a gross total output of 2.2 GW have already been shut down.
The Rolphton reactor block was the first to go into operation on June 4, 1962. The Pickering 1 reactor block was commissioned on April 4, 1971 and is the oldest still in use. The four reactor blocks of the Darlington nuclear power plant are the most powerful with a gross output of 935 MW each.
In 2012, nuclear energy accounted for 15 percent of total electricity generation in Canada and was in sixth place worldwide.

United States
In the United States (USA) there are currently 57 nuclear power plants with 95 reactor blocks and a total installed net capacity of 93,639 GW on the grid. The average age in 2014 was 35 years. 28 nuclear power plants and 37 reactor blocks with a total net output of 15.68 GW have already been shut down.
In the USA, the Vallecitos reactor block was the first to go into operation on October 19, 1957. Unit 1 in the Nine Mile Point nuclear power plant went into operation on November 11, 1969 and is the oldest still in use. With its three reactor blocks and an installed gross output of 4,174 megawatts, Palo Verde is the most powerful, with the first two reactor blocks, each with a gross output of 1,414 megawatts, also being the most powerful. The kiln Palo Verde 3 recorded the highest figure in the world in 1988 with a gross electricity production of 10.9 billion kilowatt hours.
Nuclear energy in the US accounted for 19 percent of total electricity generation in 2018 and was the number one annual electricity generation from nuclear energy worldwide.
