List of chess tournaments by Vasily Smyslow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The chess grandmaster and seventh world champion Vasily Smyslow has participated in chess tournaments for more than six decades . He had been at the top of Soviet chess since 1940 and from 1948 to 1997 he participated in fifteen of the seventeen FIDE world championship cycles . Until the early 1990s he was one of the best players in the world.

From 1948 to 1958 he competed with Mikhail Moissejewitsch Botvinnik for the world title: In 1948 Smyslow finished second, in 1954 their competition ended in a draw, in 1957 Smyslow was able to conquer the world title, but lost it again in 1958.

After that Smyslow continued to take part in almost all FIDE world championship cycles until 1997 and could even reach the candidate finals in 1984, where he was defeated by the eventual world champion Garry Kasparov .

In international tournaments Smyslow won in 1956 in Moscow shared with Botvinnik, 1959 in Moscow shared with David Bronstein and Boris Spasski , 1963 in Moscow, 1964 shared with Wolfgang Uhlmann and 1965 in Havana, 1966 in Mar del Plata, 1969 in Monte Carlo with Lajos Portisch and in 1971 in Amsterdam.

Smyslow played nine times at Chess Olympiads in the Soviet team, which each won the gold medal. For his individual results on his board, Smyslow received 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. He lost only two of a total of 113 games at the Olympics. Also in five European team championships Smyslow played in the Soviet team, which also won the gold medal, as did Smyslow on his board. At the European team championships he lost only one of a total of 35 games.

His last Elo rating was 2494, but Smyslow had not actively participated in tournaments for several years. Instead, he continued to write books, mostly about finals . His best historical rating, recorded in September 1956, was 2,800.
