List of Portuguese ambassadors in the Republic of the Congo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Portuguese ambassadors to the Republic of the Congo lists the ambassadors of the Republic of Portugal to the Republic of the Congo (between 1969 and 1991 People's Republic of the Congo ). The countries have maintained diplomatic relations since 1960, which go back to the arrival of the Portuguese sailors on the Congo River in 1482 and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Kingdom of Congo from 1491 .

A Portuguese representative was first accredited in 1961 in the Congolese capital Brazzaville . The Portuguese embassy there was closed again in 1965 after diplomatic relations were broken off as a result of the Portuguese colonial war in nearby Angola . In 1975, after the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974 and the subsequent end of the colonial war, the two states resumed diplomatic relations. Since then, Portugal has not reopened its own embassy there, the Republic of the Congo belongs to the administrative district of the Portuguese Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo ( Zaire between 1971 and 1997 ), who is second accredited in Brazzaville (as of 2019).

There is a Portuguese honorary consulate in the Congolese port city of Pointe-Noire .
