Luke Campbell , MBE (* 27. September 1987 in Kingston upon Hull ) is a British professional boxer in the lightweight . As an amateur, he was European champion in 2008, runner-up world champion in 2011 and Olympic champion in 2012 in bantamweight .

Amateur career

Luke Campbell grew up in Hull and was a member of St. Paul's ABC Hull . He started boxing there at a young age and was coached by Mick Bromby at his club. Even as a junior he was one of the best English amateur boxers in bantamweight.

He was English champion in 2007 and 2008 and won the European Championships in Liverpool in 2008 with victories against Nikola Magovac, Veaceslav Gojan , Eduard Absalimow , Denis Makarov and Detelin Dalakliew .

In 2009, after losing to John Nevin in the semi-final, he won bronze at the EU Championships and was eliminated at the 2009 World Championships in the second preliminary round against Iderkhuu Enkhjargal with a score of 9:11.

In 2011 he reached the quarter-finals at the European Championships in Ankara against Dmitrijs Gutmans and Bashir Hassan , where he was knocked out with 9:12 against Furkan Memiş . At the 2011 World Championships in Baku , he defeated Rahim Najafov, Răzvan Andreiana , Mohammed Ouadahi , Detelin Dalakliew and John Nevin before losing to Lázaro Álvarez in the final and becoming vice world champion.

He had thus qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London . With victories against Vittorio Parrinello , Detelin Dalakliew , Satoshi Shimizu and John Nevin , he became Olympic champion.

In total, he won 153 of 177 amateur fights.

Professional career

After the Olympics, he signed a professional contract with Promoter Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Sport and is coached by Jorge Rubio, Tony Sims and Mike Bromby. He made his professional debut on July 13, 2013 in his hometown of Hull in the first round against Andy Harris. In October 2014 he defeated Daniel Brizuela (record: 26-3) and in August 2015 Tommy Coyle (21-2), where he became WBC International Lightweight Champion .

In his first title defense, he lost just on points to Frenchman Yvan Mendy (32-4) in December 2015, but defeated Gary Sykes (28-4) in the fight for the Commonwealth title in March 2016 . In July 2016 he beat Argenis Mendez (23-4) and became WBC Silver Lightweight Champion.

In October 2016 he was able to defeat Derry Mathews (38-10) and in February 2017 the Mexican Jairo López (21-6). In April 2017, he surprisingly beat Darleys Pérez (33-2) by TKO in the ninth round. He was then able to fight Jorge Linares (42-3) for the WBA lightweight world championship on September 23, 2017 , but lost the fight just on points.

In September 2018 he defeated Yvan Mendy (40-4) unanimously, but also lost unanimously to Wassyl Lomatschenko (13-1) in August 2019 .

Before his professional career, he was a participant in Dancing on Ice in 2013 and reached third place. He lives in Humberside with his girlfriend and two children .
