history
Micro Focus was founded in 1976 and was able to take a leading position in the COBOL market in the following years. The company became known because it soon offered a complete COBOL development environment for the PC platform, with which users could flexibly develop COBOL programs on the PC and port them 1: 1 to mainframes or other systems.
In 1999, Micro Focus was merged with Intersolv to form Merant. In June 2001 Merant sold the Micro Focus division to the Californian investor group Golden Gate Capital and Parallax Capital . Since then, Micro Focus has been operating as a completely independent company again.
Micro Focus has expanded its portfolio through a number of acquisitions in recent years. In 2006, the Italian HAL Knowledge Solutions SPA, a manufacturer of application portfolio management software, was taken over. In 2007, Micro Focus acquired the COBOL provider Acucorp and in 2008 NetManage, a company that develops software for converting applications into web-based solutions. In 2009 Micro Focus took over the software manufacturer Borland and from Compuware the business areas "Application Testing" and "Automated Software Quality". In 2014, Micro Focus acquired the Attachmate Group with its subsidiaries Novell and SUSE . The successful merger of the two companies was announced on November 21, 2014 .
This was followed in 2016 by the acquisition of Serena Software for 540 million US dollars and the acquisition of large software divisions from Hewlett Packard Enterprise for 2.5 billion US dollars . HPE shareholders will retain 50.1% of the joint venture, which will issue shares worth $ 6.3 billion in a reverse merger.
