Mohamed Abdullah Zidan ( Arabic محمد عبدالله زيدان, DMG Muḥammad ʿAbdullāh Zīdān ; * December 11, 1981 in Port Said ) is a former Egyptian soccer player who has also had German citizenship since 2011 .

Career

society

The forward played for El Masry Port Said and Danish clubs Akademisk BK and FC Midtjylland . In the 2003/04 season he was player of the year and top scorer in the Danish SAS league .

During the winter break of the 2004/05 season, Zidan moved to the German first division club Werder Bremen . In his first two Bundesliga games, he scored a goal shortly after being substituted on. Due to an injury in early 2005, he was rarely used until the end of the season.

In the summer break of 2005, Zidan moved on loan for the 2005/06 season to 1. FSV Mainz 05 , where he became a regular and with nine goals the team's second-best goalscorer. On February 4, 2006, he scored the fastest goal of the 2005/06 Bundesliga season after 13 playing seconds at his actual employer, Werder Bremen.

Zidan returned to Bremen in the summer of 2006. After a disappointing first half of the season, in which he was hardly used, Mainz 05 finally signed him in the following winter break. In February 2007, Zidan was the first Mainz player to be voted footballer of the month in a poll organized by DFL , DSF and kicker .

In the summer of 2007, Zidan moved to Hamburger SV . There he could not prevail due to numerous injuries. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season he moved to his former coach Jürgen Klopp in Dortmund .

On matchday 31 of the 2009/10 season, Zidan tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee without outside interference and was out for seven and a half months. After recovering from his injury and having curious emigration problems from his home country Egypt , he made his comeback for the Egyptian national soccer team in a friendly against Australia on November 17, 2010 and scored the goal to make it 3-0 in the 90th minute after being in the game had come. Shortly thereafter, on December 2, 2010, he made his comeback at Borussia Dortmund against FK Karpaty Lviv in the Europa League .

During the winter break of the 2011/12 season, Zidan moved back to Mainz and received a contract there until the summer of 2012. In his first six games, he scored one goal each. He first broke the record for winter newcomers, which was three goals in the first three games, and finally the record overall, which was previously five goals in the first five games and was previously held by Fredi Bobic .

A contract extension with the Mainz for the 2012/13 season did not come about due to differences of opinion with coach Thomas Tuchel . On July 30, 2012, Zidan signed a two-year contract with the Baniyas Sport Club in the United Arab Emirates , but only played there one season. In the 2015/16 season, Zidan was in the squad of the Egyptian first division club El-Entag El-Harby .

National team

Zidan has been an Egyptian international since 2007 . With the national team he won the Africa Cup in 2008 and 2010 . He provided the template for the only goal of the game in both finals.

Personal

After winning the German championship in 2011 , Zidan was awarded German citizenship in addition to his Egyptian citizenship on May 16, 2011 at a reception in Dortmund's town hall .

Zidan was on 20 November 2013 in the absence of Egypt, first by a court to a prison sentence of six years for check fraud sentenced. The verdict did not become final , however , as the case was dropped after Zidan appealed. The Egyptian real estate company Arab Company for Projects and Urban Development had filed a lawsuit against the former international. Zidan has been charged with writing three bad checks to the company when purchasing real estate .
