Henry Purcell dies on November 21st at the age of only 36 |

- March 2 : His father's death Johann Ambrosius Bach makes Johann Sebastian Bach at the age of nine years for orphans . His stepmother wants to continue her deceased husband's office with the help of the city piper journeyman and apprentice, but does not receive the approval of the city of Eisenach . Therefore she can no longer look after Johann Sebastian and his siblings herself. Johann Sebastian therefore moves with his brother Johann Jacob to their older brother Johann Christoph in Ohrdruf . The thirteen-year-old older brother, organist at St. Michaelis in Ohrdruf, takes over Johann Sebastian's further education and musical training and especially teaches playing keyboard instruments .
- November 21 : The English composer Henry Purcell dies at the zenith of his work at the age of just 36. He is buried in Westminster Abbey next to the organ. On his tombstone it says: Here lyes Henry Purcell Esq., Who left this life and is gone to that blessed place where only his harmony can be exceeded. In the year of his death, his semi-operas Timon of Athens, The Indian Queen and The Tempest (possibly not or only partially by him) are premiered and he composes the Anthem Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary for the funeral service of Queen Maria II . of England , who was buried on March 5th .
- After working in Vienna , Eisenach , Erfurt , Stuttgart and Gotha , the composer and organist Johann Pachelbel settled in Nuremberg . As the successor to the late Georg Caspar Wecker, he becomes organist at the Sebalduskirche in his hometown.
- After some hesitation, the soprano Matteuccio , famous as the “Nightingale of Naples”, accepted an initial call from the music-loving Emperor Leopold I to the imperial court in Vienna . Although the singer received a fairytale salary, he only stayed until the summer of 1696.
- John Walsh and John Hare establish themselves as music publishers in London. Between 1695 and 1730 they will publish pieces of music in a hitherto unknown number of copies.

- February 5th : The world premiere of the opera Muzio Scevola by Giovanni Bononcini takes place in Tordinona in Rome .
- February: Two operas by Agostino Steffani are performed for the first time in Hanover:
- Baccanali (“divertimento”) in one act based on the libretto by Ortensio Mauro in the Picciolo Teatro Elettorale
- I trionfi del fato, “dramma” in three acts based on the libretto by Ortensio Mauro in Hanover Castle
- Tomaso Albinoni - Il prodigio dell'innocenza
- Three Henry Purcell semi-operas will be premiered:
- Timon of Athens
- Indian Queen ( Graduation Masque from younger brother or cousin Daniel Purcell )
- The Tempest (possibly not or only partially from Purcell)

- In Antonio Stradivari's workshop , the violin known today as Axelrod is produced, which today belongs to the Smithsonian Institution and is part of the so-called "Axelrod Quartet" in the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC . Around 1695, the cello Boni, Hegar , was probably also made.
