- May 31 : Antonio Lotti is appointed 2nd organist at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice . Before that he had already proven his skills as a temporary organist.
- July 7th : Giuseppe Felice Tosi becomes second organist in the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna .
- Giovanni Battista Bononcini made the acquaintance of the famous librettist Silvio Stampiglia . In collaboration with Stampiglia five operas will be created in the coming years.
World premieres
Opera
- January 12th : The world premiere of the pasticcio Eraclea ovvero Il ratto delle Sabbine by Giovanni Bononcini takes place in Tordinona in Rome .
- February: The opera Le rivali concordi, a “dramma” in three acts by Agostino Steffani based on the libretto by Ortensio Mauro , is premiered in Hanover.
- May 2nd : The masque or semi-opera The Fairy-Queen by Henry Purcell is premiered at the Dorset Garden Theater in London. The libretto is an anonymous adaptation of the Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare , the author is believed to be Thomas Betterton . At that time Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream is about a hundred years old; its text has been adapted to contemporary tastes and the role of the fairy queen has been more prominent. In particular, the work was shortened to allow the introduction of musical scenes. The Fairy Queen is a great success , but it turns out to be costly to perform. In order to recoup their expenses, the United Company theater company replayed the play the following year with some musical changes.

- Giovanni Battista Bononcini - La nemica d'Amore
- La Teodora Augusta by Alessandro Scarlatti based on the libretto by A. Morselli will be performed for the first time in Naples .
Jesuit theater
- August 6th : The Jesuit drama Rex invitus martyr invictus coronam terrestrem ... by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber based on the text by Vitus Kaltenkrauter [C. App. 30] is performed for the first time in Salzburg (only text preserved).
