- January : Jean-Philippe Rameau is temporarily engaged as organist at Avignon Cathedral . In May he got a job as an organist in Clermont .
- Spring: Johann Sebastian Bach successfully completes school in Lüneburg and leaves the city.
- Georg Friedrich Händel enrolls at the newly founded university in the Ratswaage in Halle to study law with Christian Thomasius . On March 13, Handel also took over the post of organist at Halle Cathedral for a probationary year, as the local cantor Leporin was dismissed at short notice. It will be the only traditional musician job in his life.
- June : Alessandro Scarlatti goes from Naples to Florence to the court of Cosimo III. de 'Medici , Grand Duke of Tuscany, who every year in the summer months organizes private opera performances at his country estate in Pratolino . Scarlatti can perform a new version of his Flavio Cuniberto there , but does not get the permanent position he had hoped for. He arrives late in Naples in December and resigns as head of the Cappella Reale at the beginning of the new year.
- Arp Schnitger is granted organ building privileges for the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein .

- 25 June : The world premiere of the opera L'Offendere per amore overo la Telesilla by Johann Joseph Fux with the libretto by Donato Cupeda takes place at the Hoftheater in Vienna .
- October 19 : On the occasion of the birthday of King Frederick IV. Has Denmark opera victory of fertile Pomona of Reinhard Keizer on the libretto by Christian Heinrich Postel its world premiere at the Theater am Gänsemarkt in Hamburg .
- November 7th : André Campra's tragédie lyrique Tancrède , with a libretto by Antoine Danchet , is performed at the Académie Royale de musique in Paris.
- November 15 : The world premiere of the opera La Clemenza d'Augusto by Johann Joseph Fux with the libretto by Pietro Antonio Bernardoni takes place at the Court Theater in Vienna.

- Death of the great Pan (libretto by Heinrich Hinsch, on the death of the opera founder Gerhard Schott , score lost)
- Victor Duke of the Normans ( pasticcio in three acts based on the libretto by Heinrich Hinsch, one act each by Bronner, Schieferdecker and Mattheson)
- Johann Mattheson also premiered the Singspiel in four acts Der noblemühige Porsenna .

- The organ builder Arp Schnitger completed the organ in the St. Salvatoris Church in Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the period 1699–1702 and the organ in the Academiekerk in Groningen (today in the Aa-Kerk) in the period 1700–1702 the construction of the organ for St. Martini in Estebrugge (Jork) started.
