- December 6 : François d'Agincour is appointed organist at the church of Sainte-Madeleine-en-la-Cité in Paris after an audition.
- Pope Clement XI. confirms that Pope Innocent XII. Prohibition of all theater and opera performances in Rome in 1698 . He will not lift this ban until 1710.
- Francesco Gasparini becomes conductor of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice .
- Johann Kuhnau succeeds Johann Schelle as Thomaskantor in Leipzig and will hold this position until his death. In addition, from this year he will also hold the position of university music director.
- Sixteen-year-old Domenico Scarlatti becomes organist and composer of the court orchestra of the Spanish viceroy in Naples .
- Georg Philipp Telemann finished his education at the Andreanum grammar school in Hildesheim and enrolled as a student at the University of Leipzig . Under pressure from his mother, he resolves to study law as planned and no longer bother with music. - In Leipzig, Georg Philipp Telemann, with the support of Mayor Franz Conrad Romanus, is gathering a crowd of music-loving fellow students around him. This ensemble, soon to be called Telemannisches Collegium Musicum , developed a fixed organizational structure with regular rehearsals and concerts and played the latest repertoire on a professional level, despite the high fluctuation of its student members.
